You stood in the hallway of the bunker trying to psych yourself up to reveal your feelings to Sam. You had felt very strongly for him since the day you met, there was something about him that drew you to him. After taking one last deep breath, you walked through the map room to the library where Sam was sitting, researching for a case.

He looked up from the book and smiled as you sat in front of him. "Hey, Y/N." The sound of his voice sent shivers down your spine. He set down his book on the table and turned his attention towards you. "What's up?" A pang of anxiety flew through you; you actually didn't know what to say. You'd spent so much time talking yourself into telling him that you hadn't worked out what to say.

Your cheeks turned bright red as the moment was finally here. You swallowed a lump in your throat and began wringing your hands, closing your eyes as you uttered the words: "I love you, Sam. I have since the very first time we met. You're the best person I know and I love you so much for it." You waited patiently for a response, but you didn't get one. Slowly, you opened your eyes and seen Sam sitting with his head bent down against the table, his arms holding his body up.

"Sam? C'mon, you've gotta say something. Don't leave a girl hanging." You leaned over and touched Sam's hand, only for him to move away. Tears sprung immediately to your eyes as Sam lifted his head to look at you, sadness evident in his features.

"I'm so sorry, Y/N. I don't feel the same way. I mean, I love you as a friend but that's as far as it goes. Again, I'm so sorry." As his words sunk in, you began to sob; cries wracking your body as Sam could only look on, unable to help you in any way.

You got up from the table and ran towards your room, slamming the door shut and grabbing your duffel from under your bed. You quickly ran around the room and grabbed everything before zipping up the bag and walking out of your door towards the stairs.

Sam rushed towards you as he seen you walking up the stairs. "Don't go, Y/N, please. You don't need to. We can still be friends, we can get past this." You shook your head as one stray tear fell down your cheek. "I can't Sam, I can't do it. Not after I've just poured my heart out to you and being rejected. It just won't be the same." Your heart hurt at the mere thought of leaving Sam but you had to do it for yourself, to give yourself time away from everything. "But, where will you go?" "I don't know yet, but I'll be alright, I promise Sammy."

You walked the remaining way up the stairs before stopping at the door. You turned around and whispered goodbye to the place you'd called home for so long. Taking one last quick glance at Sam you turned and opened the door to your uneasy new future.

______________________________

It had been a few years since you'd last seen Sam. You had to admit that it still did hurt at the fact that he didn't love you back, but you had had time to come to terms with it and you were in a much happier place. You had found somebody else and moved on, completely leaving the hunter life altogether. It was the best decision you had ever made, you were no longer scared for your life and that allowed you breathe freely for the first time ever.

Of course you knew that there were still things lurking in the shadows but that's why you had your secret stash of weapons underneath the floorboards by your bed, after all you were once affiliated with the Winchesters so something was bound to come sniffing.

You didn't want your new found love to be tainted by the woes of the supernatural world so you never spoke of it, you never had the need to; until you bumped into an old friend whilst shopping for groceries.

You and your new partner were walking up and down the aisles of a small store, arm in arm, when an old but familiar smell flew into your nostrils. Your eyes widened as you immediately recognized what, or more precisely who, the smell belonged to. Just a few steps in front of you was Sam, looking at a tin of beans that he pulled off the shelf. Sam must have sensed you looking at him because he looked up and his eyes also widened when he saw you, a small smile forming on his face.

You excused yourself from your partner, explaining that he was an old friend, and walked over to Sam before grabbing his arm and taking him into another aisle. "What on earth are you doing here?! Of all places!" "Well, hello to you to! It's been, what 3 or 4 years since you left the bunker and that's the first thing you say to me?" You narrowed your eyes and grabbed the neck of his shirt, pulling him down to your level. "Don't play with me, Samuel. What are you doing here?"

He grimaced at the use of his full name as he pulled himself out of your grip. "Well, if you must know, we're looking for a powerful weapon to destroy Chuck, he's gotten dangerously out of control and, as usual, it's up to me, Dean ans Cas to stop it." You took a few steps back in shock. "But the last time I seen Chuck, he was reunited with Amara. He was so happy." Sam shrugged his shoulders. "Yeah, well I guess that that wasn't enough anymore."

You stood in silence for a minute before Sam stepped towards you, placing a hand on your shoulder. "Listen, Y/N, there's something else I have to tell you. I know it's been a long while since we last seen each other but I know that it'll be a long while more before we cross paths again so I have to get this off my chest. I've been thinking about you a lot recently and I've fallen in love with you. I realised a few weeks after you left that I had feelings for you. I tried calling you to tell you, but your phone was disconnected. I'm so sorry for what I put you through, Y/N."

Your heart fluttered at the fact that Sam finally felt the same way about you but it was 4 years too late. You shook your head and stepped out of Sam's grip. "I'm sorry Sam, I've moved on. I don't feel the same way about you anymore. It's too little, too late." Sam's head hung low at your rejection. You reached over and cupped his cheek with your hand. "But I will always be here for you." You slipped him a piece of paper with your phone number on it. "That's my number. I've left the hunter life behind but call me if you need help with this Chuck business, I know you'll need all hands on deck for this one."

You placed a small peck to Sam's cheek before walking back to your partner. Your heart ached at the fact that you left Sam standing alone in the aisle, but you had moved on. He was too late....
