He meets my eye with a sudden surprise. Maybe it's the comfort of being in his arms that loosens my tongue and frees my hands, but I pull his tie into my fingers and find myself fighting a smile.

He cares about me. No matter how hard he fights to prove me wrong, he cares.

Silas looks like he's seen a ghost and scans me up and down. "You hit your head. The effect will wear off."

"Effect? I don't think so."

"You're the only woman who doesn't find me appealing. Yeah, effect."

"Who said I don't find you appealing?" I ask genuinely.

His gaze burns hot, hotter after hearing my words. The subtle pleasure in them makes me question everything around me, and lost in this state of confusion I find myself reaching for his hair.

Why is he even bothered about what I think of him?

The party we just left had a room of people who found him more than irresistible. Women, men...an old lady dressed in a mini skirt winking at him.

With that much attention, who'd care about what I think? I'm irrelevant, small, someone who can't speak up for her own good. How could a man like him care for my opinion?

My finger twirls around a strand of silky hair. It's so soft. Kind of cold too. Silas's brows pull together with disbelief.

When he realises I'm being serious, a deep laugh rumbles down his front and I blush at the sound. "You must have hit your head really hard huh?"

"I didn't." I protest and slowly pull my hand away. Butterflies erupt in my stomach so I avoid his eyes. "Did you find what you wanted?"

"Yeah."

"This thing you're doing against Leone...if you get what you want now, will you let it all go?"

The contract, the deal, the fake marriage?

His eyes darken when they take in my expression. "I don't let things go easily."

"Ok, and when its over? What will you do then?"

"Pick up a hobby. Visit a country, maybe Colombia. You?"

Me? Well, I didn't have an answer prepared but...

"Buy a house. Buy an island. Travel the world, turn thirty and then maybe get married to a dork who spends his time obsessing over gardening."

His expression slowly fades. I watch his adams apple bob as he looks away and pulls on his tie a little. "There's still a long time left for that, chiaro de luna."

I guess so. I should be focusing on my nearest goal, finishing this marriage and getting my money. The car pulls into the driveway in front of the mansion, and I turn and reach for the door behind me, sliding off his lap as I push it open.

When I step out I realise I'm sliding forward and gasp, trying to steady myself over the ice with my heels before Silas grabs my waist from behind.

"Wait up klutz." He breathes against my ear as he holds me up. "You can't go a day without slipping, you think you can walk fine with a head injury?"
