It's well after one by the time I manage to pull myself back together and Owen sat with me the whole time.

"Okay," I whisper. "I'm okay."

"Good," Owen replies. "Now, what can I do?"

"I need to call Phil," I say. "Organise a doctor to be here at every moment on this ward, or Sang's moving. I can't have anything happen if I do drift off. I can't stay awake until she's healed, which means there needs to be better support here."

"Sounds good," he says. He hands me my phone and I dial Phil's number.

Outgoing call to Phil Roberts

Phil: Sean? What's wrong? I'm on assignment.

Sean: Can you talk?

Phil: Not for long.

Sean: Sang has sepsis.

Phil: Shit. How bad?

Sean: Boderline severe, but not there yet.

Phil: Let me get a replacement here and I'll head in.

Sean: Good.

We hang up and I turn to Owen. "He's on his way."

"Good," Owen says. "Can you try and nap till he gets here? I'll stay awake."

"I don't know," I murmur. "Let me see which doctors are here."

I use the pager on the desk to page all doctors here. I want everyone here. I sit back with Owen as they start turning up. I'm pleased it takes less than fifteen minutes for them to arrive.

"Dr Green," Dr Usher greets. "What's going on?"

"Is this everyone who is at the hospital now?" I ask.

"Everyone that isn't busy," he replies.

"Sang has sepsis," I say. Some gasp, which is hilarious, but some don't seem to care. "Dr Sorenson, in case you missed who I meant." That got more reactions, thankfully. "I want to know who can look after this floor, including her, whilst I sleep."

"Fill us in," Dr Usher says. "Phil's away."

"He's coming in," I reply. He raises an eyebrow and I nod. I hate that we're not all academy, but the ones that don't at least know enough. "Okay." I explain the story and what has happened up till now. "We're going to do further tests when she's awake, and obviously bring surgical in again to see if she requires a third surgery."

"Third?" someone asks. I sigh and explain what brought her in and how shit her care has been so far.

"She's not had an easy recovery," Kai, one of my paeds' interns, points out. "How can we help?"
