Some Old Times and Some New
Dinner was served in the hotel dining room
Supervised by Rue, no effort to assume
Just two old friends catching up on the past
But she'd see they had time to make the meal last.
'Cassie's made a fine success of the library,' he said.
'Yes, she wrote, said the town's now well read.'
Harriet saw the hesitation in his eyes
'Why did you come, Aaron, and please, no lies.'
'Tuckerville has changed. Progress, I guess.
But with that progress, came a lot of stress.
I missed how simple things were to do . . .
And to be painfully honest, Harriet, I missed you.'
Aaron, we talked of this, long ago, before I left.'
The look on his face became bereft
'I thought your mind might change after you settled.
Tuckerville hasn't been the same,' he chuckled.
'What about your paper?' She ignored his declaration.
'I gave it over to John,' he replied without hesitation.
'But, Aaron, now what will you do?'
'Start over again . . . maybe here, like you.'
'BG has a paper, the Gold Pillars, no amateur upstart.
It covers the territory, and it's been here since the start.
And the woman who runs it is a close friend.'
Silence, as the cold, neglected dinner came to an end.
