With the tractor, we were able to drive through Tennessee and into Virginia without a single monster attack, but we did have to deal with a lot of road rage due to how slow we went, but after a day, we were in Virginia.

"We need to find somewhere to stop. I need sleep," Hawthorn said, so we kept our house open for anywhere we could stay that would fit a tractor, and we ended up spotting an old farmhouse that was white with a brown roof, and it looked like it was built in the early 1900s, so we pulled up to it and got out. Cecil and I had to climb down to get out while Hawthorn just jumped.

"This place gives me the creeps" Cecil said

"So long as there are no snakes, I'm fine with staying here" I said

"Let's just go in." Hawthorn said, and it looked like he was struggling to keep his eyes open

as we walked in. I was glad that I didn't have a fear of spiders like some people because there were spider webs everywhere. There was a staircase that led to the second floor and a small hall next to it that led into another room. On both our right and our left, there was an archway that led into another room.

We walked to the right and into a living room that had old peeling wallpaper that I honestly couldn't say what the original color was, and the floor was a cream carpet that kicked up dust as we walked on it. There was a fireplace that had an old red couch in front of it with a matching love seat to the left of it and a rocking chair to the right.

We went over to the couches and moved them so that we had room to lay out stuff to sleep on since none of us liked the idea of sleeping on the couches.

"You two can go ahead and sleep. I'll stay up and keep a look out for monsters" I said

"Are you sure?" Hawthorn asked as he said down

"Yes, besides, you are already falling asleep" I said

"I can stay up and keep watch as well" Cecil said

"No, you need sleep too" I said

"I will after my watch comes to an end, then I'll wake you." Cecil said

"That seems like a good Idea" I said

"Wake us if-" Hawthorn started to say but then he fell asleep in the middle of it his head hanging down as he sat there.

"Help me get his backpack off, it will be bad for his neck if he sleeps like that" I said

"That does look uncomfortable" Cecil said

We walked over and took off his backpack carefully so as not to wake him then I pulled a blanket out of it and laid it over him. then I pulled out to more blankets and handed one to Cecil and we both sat down.

"He works to hard, and so do you" Cecil said

"Me?" I asked

"Yeah, you always seem to put others before yourself" Cecil said

"That's a bad thing?" I asked

"It can be, you'll make your friends worry if you don't do anything for yourself" Cecil said

"I don't really have any friends unless you count my school's nurse" I said

"You don't count me? that harsh, and here I was thinking we were friends" Cecil said in a mockingly hurt way

"You want to be my friend?" I asked

"Yeah, way weren't I?" Cecil said

"The kids at my school mostly just saw me as a misfit" I said

"People have called me that too. I think we misfits need to stick together" Cecil said with a smile

"Yeah, I guess it's nice to have a friend who understands" I said smiling back at him

"So why the school nurse? is she the one who taught you what you know about doctory stuff?" Cecil asked

"He, I did learn some from him but no he didn't teach me all I know" I said

"What got you talking to him?" Cecil said and I sat there for a moment wondering if I should tell him and after a minute I decided I would. I look over at Hawthorn to make sure he was asleep then I lifted up my shirt to show Cecil the bruise Hank had given me

"I was picked on a lot at school, mostly by two boys, and a lot of times I had to go to the nurse afterwards" I said

"They did that?" Cecil asked

"Yeah I was trying to get on top of the dome climber at school and Hank one of the boys who liked to pick on me the most grabbed my foot and tripped me making me land on one of the bars" I said

"What did your mom do when she found out? did Hank get in trouble?" Cecil asked

"Besides Jake the school's nurse you're the first person I've told" I said

"I'm the first? why?" Cecil asked

"I didn't want to worry my mom over it, I-I didn't want her to think less of me" I said

"You told me and I don't think less of you" Cecil said

"You don't?" I asked

"Why would I? You didn't do anything wrong that butthead Hank did" Cecil said making me laugh

"Thanks, I'm glad I can have a friend like you" I said

"Me too." Cecil said

"Now get some sleep" Cecil added in a more manly voice and I guessed it was his way of saying that he wasn't going soft.

I wrapped myself in my blanket and closed my eye but as I started to fall asleep I got up and walked over to one of the windows in the room.

"You need sleep" Cecil said

"I know I just...I need to do something first" I said

"What do you need to do?" Cecil asked

"Well...I...man you're going to think this is stupid" I said feeling embarrassed

"I...I need to say good night....to my dad" I said

"How are you going to say good night to someone you don't know?" Cecil asked

"Promise you won't laugh or think it's stupid?" I asked

"Promise" Cecil said

"From a young age, well as long as I can remember actually. my mom has told me that my father was in every sunrise and sunset so....." I said veering off

"So you say good night to him when the sun goes down" Cecil said

"Yeah...and good morning every time the sun comes up" I said looking down at my feet

"I kinda wish I had something like that with my dad" Cecil said

"So you don't think it's weird?" I asked

"No, I'm actually a little jealous. I haven't heard hardly anything about my dad" Cecil said

"Say good night to your dad, then you should sleep yourself. I don't think he would be happy to know you're not taking care of yourself" Cecil said and I gave him a small smile before looking back out the window and up at the sky

"Good night dad" I said softly before I went back to where I was.

I grabbed my blanket and laid down then wrapped the blanket around myself and went to sleep.
