§ Chapter one §

I pulled out my favorite sweater, the one that my mother had gotten me a few weeks before she passed. It was a beautiful light blue with light pink and green stripes. I had the perfect outfit planned for the day: my sweater with light jean shorts and cream bangles with matching flats. I let out an aggravated sigh when I saw a dark spot on the collar. “Really?” I muttered as I made my way to the kitchen. After fumbling through a drawer for a few seconds, I found the little red stick and dabbed it lightly on the sweater. Dad came running in and held onto the entrance as he lost his balance. “What are you…you…I heard a noise.” he slurred. “Really, Dad? You’re drunk this  early in the morning? That’s a new low for you. Well, I’m off to college. I won’t see you for another few days.” He took another swig out of his brown paper bag before disappearing into the basement, completely ignoring me. Before leaving I took a glance at the microwave, “Ah, it’s already 7:00.” I ran to my room, grabbing my bags and my coffee. I ran out the door and hopped in my car. I hummed to the radio, replied to a few texts, and took some sips of my coffee before I arrived at my college. It was only my first day, so I was definitely nervous. I tried hiding it as the woman at the front desk checked me in. “MM…your name is Cadence Edwards, sweetie?” I nodded. “Yes, you will be in the girl’s dorm 106 on floor 3.” She handed me a small key attached to a card with a smile. “Well, if you have trouble getting there please just ask someone. We take pride in our kind students here.” I grabbed my suitcases and walked down the bright hallways, smiling at the nearby students. I made my way up some stairs and found that I was on floor 5. I groaned loudly and studied the map on the staircase doorway. “Need help?” A husky, deep voice called out. I turned to see a tall boy leaning against the wall. His curly hair was dark and pushed to one side, falling over his eyes. His eyes were green and light; beautiful. He had on a white V-neck with black skinny jeans and Converse. “Y-Yeah,” I muttered. “What’s your room number?” A perfect English accent slid over his words. I held him the card with the number on it. We started walking to a different building. “So tell me about yourself.” he said, smiling at me. “My name is Cadence. I’m from California, my mom died when I was a toddler, my dad’s an alcoholic, and I love taking care of people.” He laughed. “Wow, I didn’t mean that much.” “Your turn,” I smiled. “Well…my name is Harry. I love singing, playing guitar, I hate school, I love partying and beautiful girls such as yourself.” I blushed and laughed awkwardly. He laughed, probably at the dorky look on my face. We arrived at the end of a long hallway at my room. “Well, here you are.” He flashed me a dimpled smile. His light green eyes focused down on mine. “Well, I better go. They’d kill me if they found me in the girl’s dorm. Have a good night.” I thanked him and started to unlock the door. He turned in his footsteps and looked at the card. “You know, this has your room and phone number on it. Mind if I use it sometime?” He winked. I nodded, blushing and lost for words. I went into the small room and got things settled in before looking out at the night sky. Harry’s wonderful face kept flashing in my mind, giving me butterflies. I got into the small bed and snuggled deeper in the covers. Before I knew it, I was asleep and ready for my life to begin anew.

I put the steaming coffee pot back on the counter and groaned. I used a nearby paper towel to clean up my mess. “Klutz,” A husky voice called from the doorway. I jumped and turned to see a smiling Harry. “Yeah, I normally buy my coffee which is already poured.” I laughed awkwardly. Something about him made me feel so nervous. He kneeled beside me and wiped up the brown liquid from the tile floor. He came back up to meet my eyes. “I’m going to take you out tonight.” he said confidently. I didn’t know if it was a question or statement, but I didn’t really care. I laughed. “You are?” “Yeah, I’ll pick you up at nine. Wear something pretty.” He winked and left, closing the door quietly behind him. I sighed and whispered to myself, “What just happened?” I grabbed my bag and went to my first class.

Later that night, I found myself racing to be ready in time. My childhood friend and new roommate Bella sat on my bed reading a magazine. “Why are you freaking out so much? It’s only 8:30. You don’t know Harry like I do—he’s always late.” “How do you know Harry? You’ve only been here for a year.” I asked, applying another layer of foundation. “Please,” she scoffed, “every girl knows Harry. He likes you, though. He acts differently around you.” “Are you sure?” “Yeah, definitely. I have to go. I’m meeting my boyfriend at the movie theater. Good luck,” she whispered as she hugged me goodbye.

Harry got to the house at around 9:15. I opened the door and saw him with a smirk on his face. “You look great.” He licked his lips before grabbing my hand. Girls eyed me as we walked down the hallways. He led me to a parked, red vehicle and opened the passenger door for me. “Where are we going?” I asked. All he did was smirk towards me and fixed his hair in the mirror. “How old are you?” I asked. “Twenty,” It was pretty quiet for the rest of the ride. We pulled up to a dock and he took me out to the sand. The waves rolled gently onto the shore, leaving flecks of foam on my toes. He put his hand on my back as we walked to a spot under a tree. Kids played nearby and a dog barking could be heard in the distance. He pulled out a basket and unloaded some sandwiches. “You packed all this?” I asked, surprised. “Well, of course. A girl like you deserves a nice first date with a boy, correct?” I blushed. His plump, pink lips opened to a smile. He pushed his dark curls to the side and stretched out on the blanket. The night breeze blew gently and made my cheeks sting. I cuddled up beside him, his strong arm resting on the back of my neck. His loose hand was wrapped around mine. “What do you want to do when you’re older?” I asked. “I want to be a guitar player or singer. I don’t know. I’m fine with anything as long as I have a strong girl by my side.” He squeezed my hand gently. I smiled at his answer. “I take it you want to do something with nursing.” “Yeah, that’d be great, but it will never happen.” “Why?” he asked, confused. “It’s too hard to make it in that business.” He scoffed. “If you want to be it, be it. Why do you give up so easy?” “It’s hard not to. Everybody seems to let me down.” I looked up to lock eyes with his. “I’ll try not to.” He whispered in my ear. I could feel his hot, minty breath on my face, sending chills through my spine. I moaned quietly at the feeling. He chuckled, like he was winning the game of seduction. “How many girls have you been with?” I asked. He paused for a minute before answering, “A lot.” “Why are we doing this then?” I pulled his arm off me and sat up. He sat up too and put his hand on my knee. “You’re different.” he whispered. “I bet you say that to all of them.” “No, I don’t. They all wanted the same thing that I did. I don’t know. You’re just different. You’re clumsy and awkward.” I laughed. “Thanks,” I said sarcastically. “You’re also beautiful and strong. I could tell just by looking at you that you’d been through a lot. That’s why you’re different.” I looked up as my cheeks filled with red. He used his thumb to caress my face. “I also love how you blush and get nervous around me.” He chuckled. I smiled and kissed his fingers. Thunder roared in the distance and rain started to pour, making his curls fall. He scrambled to grab the stuff and put his jacket over my head. We climbed in his car and drove off into the slick streets. We pulled up to the university and ran up to the girl’s building. Before I went in, I felt his large hands grab my waist and pull me towards him. He looked down at me, his brown curls faded from the water. He held my chin and tilted it up towards his. He smiled, revealing his dimples. He pulled me in gently to place his lips on mine. I felt his wet hair on my cheek and our soaked clothes stuck to each other. He pulled back and looked at me with stunning eyes. “I’ve been waiting for a kiss in the rain with a perfect girl,” he whispered, “And I finally got it.” I gulped and put my fingers gently up to my mouth. “Good night,” He said before caressing my cheek. I stood stunned as I watched him walk back to his car and drive away.
