"No heartbeat" Addison told the nurse who nodded and left the room

"What's going on??" Matt gasped

"She's too small, she can't be born yet" Meredith panicked

"Meredith, Matt-" Addison started

"It's Dr Jones!" Matt snapped

"Dr Jones, I can't find a heartbeat" Addison said and Meredith broke down

"I don't believe you, give me the ultrasound" Matt snapped

Addison turned the screen so they could see

"Look, I'm very sorry but I really can't find a heartbeat" Addison apologized once again

"Meredith, stay with me" She heard Alex' voice

"Mommy okay?" She now heard Grace's voice. She wanted to tell her daughter she was fine and everything would be okay but she couldn't form words, her head didn't cooperate

"She's okay Grace. The doctors will take care of mommy. Are you hurt?" She heard Alex talk

"I'm kay" Grace whispered

At that moment, the door opened and the ambulance men walked in. They mobilised Meredith and carried her on the stretcher

"Mommy!" Grace yelled

"We're coming with mommy" Alex said and lifted her in his arms as he climbed in the back of the ambulance

The ride to Seattle Grace didn't take very long and Richard had assured him that Matt wasn't at the hospital. When the doors of the ambulance opened, Alex saw everyone waiting for Meredith

"Her head and upper body took the worst I think" Alex informed them. They rushed the stretcher inside

"I want my mommy" Grace quietly said as she rested her head on Alex' shoulder

"What happened?" Richard asked as he brushed his finger over Grace's cheek the the little girl flinched in Alex' arms

"Shh, Grace. It's okay" Alex tightened the embrace

"I wanna see mommy!" She cried out

Richard had a feeling what had happened because of Alex' call to keep Matt away

"He did this?" Richard asked and Alex nodded in response

"Richard, can you check on Meredith? I wanna know when me and Grace can go see her" Alex asked him

Richard nodded and took off

"Well Grace, why don't we go to my office for a bit? Maybe we can eat some snacks" Alex suggested with a soft smile

"Daddy always says that snacks are bad" Grace whispered

"But he never said uncle Alex' snacks are bad" Alex tried to comfort the little girl

Grace kept quiet in his arms, except for asking to see her mother once in a while. Alex had laid her down on the couch and covered her with a blanket. Once she was asleep, he sat down at his desk to do some paperwork

When his pager rang, the little girl sat up in shock and started crying

"Shh, Grace. It's okay, it's my pager. You see?" Alex showed him his phone "It's because we got some news about your mommy, let's go see her" Alex smiled softly

Meanwhile in Meredith's room, Derek was doing a neurocheck. She had a concussion and he wanted to keep an eye on it. The CT had showed she had no brain bleed which was a big relief

"Derek?" Addison walked in

"Did they page you?" Derek frowned

"I know her. What happened?" She asked concerned

"I don't know. Richard knows and said it was private, he wanted as less people on the case as possible" Derek explained

"Where's her husband?" Addison asked "Mark said they try to keep him out of here?" She frowned

"Yeah.." Derek nodded "I know we can't speculate but it wouldn't surprise me if he had to do something with this" Derek looked furious "I was at their house and she hurted her leg then.. Addison, is there anything you know?" Derek asked as she looked away

"A few years back I worked at the same hospital as Meredith and her husband. She was 5 months pregnant when an aggressive patient pushed her. By the time we got her an ultrasound the baby already lost the battle. No heartbeat.." Addison had to compose herself "He acted weird, even blamed her, he was rude towards me" Addison explained

"She lost a baby?" Derek frowned

"Babygirl.." Addison sighed "She then had an infection which forced her to stay at the hospital for a while. I know her husband started drinking back then, their other daughter was either asleep at Meredith's side or in daycare" Addison sighed

"What about their family?" Derek asked concerned

"Her mother, Ellis Grey, had already died and she had no contact with her dad. I don't remember why his family wasn't around" Addison grabbed Meredith's uninjured hand "I've been thinking about her a lot once they moved"

"I had no idea" Derek looked at Meredith and felt his heart breaking

"She didn't deserve any of this. She's a good doctor and always seems to forget about herself. We need to be here for her, she won't ask for help" Addison said

"Alex Karev is an old friend of her, I can't believe he let her stay with him" Derek shook his head

"I don't know Meredith that well but that woman is scared, Derek. She only wants to protect her daughter, that's clear" Addison sighed as she brushed the hair out of Meredith's face

"I don't know Addison.. When I was there.. I- Her little girl.." Derek was lost for words but got distrubed by a knock on the door

"Mommy!" Grace smiled from her spot in Alex' arms

"Shh, mommy's asleep. You need to be a bit quiet because your mommy hurt her head" Derek slowly explained

"Mommy's gonna be okay, right?" Grace frowned

"She will be okay sweetie" Addison assured her

"Can I stay with mommy?" Grace asked

"You can for now but tonight we're going home-" Alex started telling but she started kicking him

"No! Not going home!" She yelled

"Shh Gracie, not your home. You can come with me" Alex rubbed her back

Derek and Addison now knew what that meant

Her 'husband' did this

Alex carried Grace over to Meredith's bed and helped the little girl lay down next to her mother. The three of them chuckled as Grace's soft snores were louder than the constantly beeping of all the machines

"She'll be okay, right?" Derek looked at the other two doctors

"Physically she'll be okay" Derek nodded at the beautiful woman, completely beaten up, laying in the hospital bed
