Numbness...

Numbness is what you felt. You don't quite remember what happened, but that didn't matter. Your surroundings sounded like they were all submerged under the serene bliss of a still lake. Finally, you opened your eyes. You were floating in a void of nothingness. Nothing was for miles and you had no destination. Or so you thought. Looking down, you saw... yourself? Looking around, it seemed like there was nowhere else to go but down into the room. As soon as you pushed past the threshold of the walls, the sounds around you became clear. You were lying on a hospital bed, hooked up to machines you didn't even know existed. Tubes came out of almost every limb of your body. It was almost frightening that you were like this. You remember now. Why you are where you are. A group of seniors attacked you behind the school and beat you within an inch of your life. You don't know why, but they did. You sigh, and sit down in the empty chair across from your body. You didn't even care to think about how you were sitting when you didn't have a corporeal body. The squeak of the hospital door and a familiar voice brought you back to the present. Looking up, you hear "thank you, miss" as he walked over to your almost lifeless body. It was Dib. You walked over to him as he sighed and gripped the bed railings in sadness.

"Hey..." a shaky breath, "how are you?" The only thing to answer his question was your EKG. Another breath. "I hope you know, I-" The theme song for Mysterious Mysteries went off in his pocket. Wiping the evident tears from his face, he quickly answered it. "Hello?"

"Dib, we need you home, dinner is going to be in an hour. Stop searching for Bigfoot in the woods or whatever or I'll come get you myself." You recognized that voice. Gaz. Has she not heard about the accident yet?

"Ok. I'll be home in a couple minutes." He ended the call before taking one last look at you, trying to hold the tears in. You outstretched your hand to try to touch him, but he walked out of your grasp before you could do so. After the squeak of the door, there was silence once again. And, once again, you sat back into the empty chair. You thought and thought about whether it was your time or not. You haven't seen the grim reaper anywhere but you were waiting for them to come. It seemed like you were sitting in that chair for days. In real time, it had only been 12 hours. The sun had made the horizon its grave before you heard another noise. You sat up, looking over in the direction of it. Metal scraping outside your window. As you got up, the window opened and the grunts of another familiar voice became clear. A vertically challenged alien was now sneaking into your hospital room. A huff as he stood up straight and brushed off his uniform. As he caught a glance at your broken body, he froze. He walked over cautiously, almost as if he thought the wrong move would shatter you into a million pieces.

"(Y/N)..." Hearing how quiet his voice was almost gave you chills. He never spoke quietly. "You really were broken by those filthy beasts...." A flash of anger. "Well, they won't get away with this. Zim will... take care of them for you. No one hurts my human and gets away with it." He growled before turning away from you and promptly jumping out the window. You stood there in confusion but almost comforted that the boys had come to visit you. Right. A decision has to be made. You look at your body and ponder before taking a deep breath. You slowly begin to push yourself into your beaten and bloodied vessel. And, in an instant, a gasp ripped from your throat. You were back, but still numb. Probably from the painkillers. You pressed the nurse call button and waited. You were going to be ok.
