SCENE THREE
SETTING: 19 BERGASSE, VIENNA
SFX: "CRAZY" DOOR CHIME
MARTHA
Coming!
(SHE OPENS THE DOOR)
Doctor Jung! What a pleasant surprise I thought you were at home in Switzerland.
CARL
Please Mrs. Freud, I must have an urgent word with you.
MARTHA
(STARTLED)
Should I sit down? Is Sigmund all right? Has he had an accident?
CARL
No. Well in a sense - yes he has had an accident.
MARTHA
Oh no!
(SHE BECOMES INCREASINGLY ALARMED)
CARL
No! Not that kind of accident!
MARTHA
But you said he had an "accident"?!
CARL
Not an "accident" accident.
MARTHA
But it "was" an accident?
CARL
Look forget I said accident. I shouldn't have said accident! I am concerned for his mental health.
MARTHA
(SUDDENLY UNDERSTANDING)
Oh well!
CARL
He has written a threatening letter to me.
MARTHA
Threatening? Do you really mean "threatening" or is this like the "accident" thing?
CARL
Yes. I really mean threatening. And... I may have to risk my profession if I tell you this. I am sorry but I have stumbled upon some information about your husband that has put me in a very awkward position.
MARTHA
This is something of a personal nature? Not professional?
CARL
I am afraid so. Doctor Freud has been...
MARTHA
(CALMLY)
...having an affair with my sister Minna?
CARL
(ASTONISHED)
I'm sorry?
MARTHA
Was that what you were going to reveal to me?
CARL
You know?
MARTHA
Well, that first night you were here, I overheard you talking to the wall.
CARL
(GLANCES OUT TO THE AUDIENCE)
Oh yes. The wall.
MARTHA
Well, you had been drinking. But I always suspected them of course.
CARL
They do not realize that you know.
MARTHA
The wall?
CARL
No. Sigmund and Minna.
MARTHA
Well we have all been living in denial. Sometimes I can convince myself it is not really happening. I mill about doing the chores.
(SHE STARTS TO LOSE HER COOL AS SHE CONTINUES)
Ignoring the squeals, the moans, the rough loud humping noises of the bed frame against these paper-thin walls! Sigmund yelling, "I AM CLIMAXING! I AM CLIMAXING!"
(SHE STARTS WEEPING. CARL HOLDS ON TO HER. SHE SOBS INTO HIS SHOULDER)
CARL
What a crude old man! How dare he treat a woman as beautiful as you like that!
MARTHA
(LOOKING INTO HIS EYES)
Beautiful? Do you really mean that?
CARL
(PANDERING)
Of course I mean it. I believe women are the missing element in our religions and our conscious lives. You must always be treated with respect! That is how I feel about women.
(MARTHA MOVES INTO THE SPOTLIGHT)
MUSIC: LIVING A LIE PART 3
