Armaan

"Saara saara din haathon main phone pakday hotay hain tum bachon main, laikin zaroorat ke waqt phone band ho jata hai!" Papa was furious as he told me off.

*"You kids are always on your phones the whole day, but when it's needed your phones batteries die!"

I'd returned home after an eventful evening, where I had been caught out in a targeted killing. I had stopped at the bank after returning from the airport, and the whole drama had occurred right outside the ATM machine where I'd stood taking out money.

I stood in front of my parents and Chachu and Chachi, head bowed. I had scared the life out of my family, including the extended family, so this yelling was well-deserved.

"Bhai, chalain bacha hai. Ghalti hogayi, aur maan bhi gaya hai." Chachu said, carefully. "Ainda aisa nahin karega, haina Armaan?" He looked pointedly at me.

*"Bhai, he's a kid. He made a mistake, and he has accepted it."
"He won't do this again, right Armaan?"

"Bacha nahin hai, Ahad. Bachon ko bhi akal hoti hai. Apni Eshal ko hi dekhlo, kitni samajdar hai, Ma Sha Allah." Papa frowned.

*"He's not a kid, Ahad. Kids have more sense than him. Look at our Eshal, she's so sensible, Ma Sha Allah."

"Papa, koi baat nahin. Armaan sahi salaamat hai, Alhumdulillah. Hamain bus itna hi chahiye." Ismael Bhai entered the room and came to stand beside me, placing a hand on my back.

*"Papa, it's okay. Armaan is safe and sound, Alhumdulillah. We only want that."

"Don't ever repeat this again, am I clear?" Papa warned me. "Always, always ensure that your phone is charged sufficiently enough to do its real purpose, which is making phone calls."

"Sorry, Papa."

Suddenly, Amara rushed in with Muraad Bhai and Nomi Bhai. "Bhai!" My little sister rushed up to me, her eyes filled with tears, and hugged me. "You scared us!"

I patted her head. "Sorry, kid."

Luckily, having their daughter and son-in-law over, my parents soon got distracted, making me discreetly sigh in relief.

I slowly began to walk out of the room, when Nomi Bhai placed a hand on my shoulder. "Thank you." He said, quietly. "Maheen Appi told me."

I nodded. "I only did what I felt was right."
