~Chapter 44

We lost many matches against multiple schools in the past. In fact, it's been four years since our school won the Volleyball Championships.

Erick is convinced he's our team's 'Lucky Charm' and won't stop bragging about it.

I told him to go to hell in a ruder way.

According to him, ever since he joined our team, we've been winning left right and center, because he's our best player.

"Whatever, Diaz. As long as we win." I say, sticking my tongue out at him.

We are currently at Heatherwoods High for the semi finals.

"All right, give it your best shot, okay? No mess ups. We can win this. Don't lose hope. We've come too far to turn back. Are you with me?" Coach Robyn says, looking at each one of us sternly.

We nod our heads solemnly, then the buzzer goes off, signaling the start of the match.

We cheer and take our positions on court.

Competition at this level is beyond tough.

Because it's an Interschool match, stakes are high and so is the pressure.

Everyone wants to win, making the chances of each team winning slim.

By half time of the third match, our team is far, far behind.

Not only did we lose the first two matches, but we're not making much progress in this one.

The score is 3- 17.

Us being 3, by the way.

Looking around at my teammates faces, I suck in a breath.

They look exhausted.

They all look like they've depleted the very last ounce of energy they have already.

The other team, is chatting amongst themselves animatedly, not even showing a sign of fatigue.

"Come on, we need to win this. It's our only chance to prove our worth. We can do this. It's not as bad as you think. We just need a good...strategy." I say, half heartedly.

I myself am exhausted to the core, and I really want to believe we have hope for our team.

"Jesy, they're too strong. Look at them, they're not even tired! We're barely standing upright. There's no way we can win this." Jas says quietly.

I've never heard her sound so weak and tired before.

"How are they still alive?" Andrea says dramatically.

I sigh.

"We can't let them win. I know you guys want this as much as I do. If we just put our heads together, we can win." I say, trying to hold it together for my team.

Erick squeezes my shoulder for support.

Just then, the buzzer sounds, signaling our last chance at wining the semi finals.

"We can do this. Where's your team spirit? Remember the plan we discussed if things go wrong." I say, trying my best to conceal my worry and fatigue.

We cheer, though it sounds weak and half hearted, and take our positions.

I can't let my team down.

Although, now that I think about it, something is amiss about the other team...

In the end, it doesn't matter how tired we are and how they aren't.

We lost.
