This series is set after the episode "Into the Digiverse" during the third season of Ninjago. But although this is around that time, some things are changed.
A little background information: The Overlord is completely human, and the ninja know it. Lloyd is currently still the Overlord's hostage since his powers got drained and the ninja are searching for him.
In addition, some events are not present in this series. For example, the Cole/Jay/Nya love triangle is not a thing (at least at the beginning of the book), as well as the Borg Tower having any significance to anything. Instead, the Overlord has some other system going on.
Even so, some characters and events from later seasons so appear.
Final note: The monastery is set in the forest rather than on the mountain.
