All the people in the front row of both the armies blew their Shankh, marking the beginning of war. The Kuntiputra sena gathered for its first day formation of Vyuh, the 5 Upapandavas headed east upon their horses. At the foremost portion of the Vyuh, all the kuntiputras are upon their chariots. They have assumed such a Vyuh by which they can easily penetrate the Kaurava army and reach for Duryodhan.
The type of vyuh they made is the biggest strength of Senapatis, whose formation is immensely difficult and to control it is equally difficult. The type of Vyuh which is terrifying as the armour of Indra, The Vajra Vyuh.
But Pitamah Bhism didn't order his army to assume any Vyuh, he just ordered his Army to Attack.
"SAINIKO AKRAMAN !!" Bhism roared.
"AKRAMAN !!" Roared the Kuntiputras and Senapati Dhristadyum.

Both the armies attacked each other, Arjun summoned agniastra and showered the Kaurav army with fireballs. Bheem got on the ground and fought the army with his Gada, killing at least 10-15 with each smash. Karna multiplied the arrows and shot at least 200 arrows on the Kaurav army. Nakul fought a duel with his uncle Shalya and Sehdev fought with Shakuni. The Vyuh kept penetrating the Kaurav army and kept getting closer and closer to Duryodhan but Bhism still didn't order his Army to form a Vyuh in defence.
Bhism shot two arrows, creating two huge tornadoes from both east and west side. It was not a attack but a Vyuh formation, The Sarvoto Bhadra Vyuh. Only if the Vajra vyuh lies outside that Vyuh, it will be effective in breaking the Sarvoto Bhadra Vyuh. But the Kuntiputra Sena is almost in the centre, Mahamahim Bhism was waiting for this moment.
Yuddhistir ordered Maharaj Virat, Karna and Dhritadyum to go to the back of their army, as that part had no protection, and ordered Bheem to go and protect Upapandavas who were fighting with Ashwathama, he ordered Arjun to go and fight with Guru Dronacharya. Now Yuddhistir was left alone with Nakul and Sehdev
Bhisma ordered to release the fire balls, separating Nakul and Sehdev from Yuddhistir. He ordered the foot soldiers and atirathis to attack Yuddhistir. Bhism said that he'll escort Duryodhan to Yuddhistir as only a king can capture a king, and in absence of Dhritrashtra, Duryodhan can. Shakuni and Dushashan also tagged along, although Bhism told them to capture Yuddhistir they had different plans. Shakuni told Duryodhan not to waste time in capturing Yuddhistir, its better to kill him and get done with it.

Abhimanyu saw that Yuddhistir was alone, he asked Uttar to send a signal to everyone regarding the situation. Uttar shot an arrow in the air, it formed a red flag signaling everyone that Yuddhistir was alone.
Arjun and Krishna were busy with Dronacharya, whereas Karna and Amarsri were busy with Kripacharya and Bheem was busy with Ashwathama. Nakul was busy with Vikarn whereas Sehdev was busy with some other king. Realizing no-one was free Abhimanyu engaged in a duel with Bhism, who was feeling bad for fighting his own great grandchild. Seeing that bhism was not paying attention to Yuddhistir, the evil trio together attacked Yuddhistir breaking the rule of one-on-one on first day itself.
The trio knew that they can't defeat Yuddhistir with spears, So Shakuni shot an arrow towards him, making his spear fall. Yuddhistir looked at the evil trio angrily.
"LIJIYE BHRATA YUDDHISTIR. KAHI AAP HUM PAR LALCHAN NA LAGAYE KI HUMNE NIYAM BHANG KIYE HAI." Dushashan said throwing a mace at him, which Yuddhistir caught easily.
"USKI CHINTA MAT KARO, LALCHAN LAGEGA TAB BHI TUMHARE MAILE CHARITRA PAR DIKHAYI NAHI DEGA, PRIYE DUSHASHAN." Yuddhistir said sarcastically. The trio attacked him together.
"EK YODDHA KE SAMNE ITNE SAARE YODHA, AB NIYAM KA BHANG NAHI HO RAHA MAMASHREE ?" Yuddhistir said hitting Dushashan.
"AAPNE HI KAHA THA, LALCHAN KI CHINTA MAT KARO, AB HUM LALCHAN KE STHAN PAR LABH KI CHINTA KAR RAHE HAI." Shakuni said as the trio together attacked Yuddhistir. But before they could hit him, Dilip and Prithvik hit them Duryodhan and Dushashan from each side and kicked Shakuni back.
"KAYARO ! EK YODDHA SE 3 LAD KE KYA BAL DIKHA RAHE HO ?" Dillip said hitting Duryodhan with his mace making him fall backwards.
"YUDH KARNA HAI TOH HUMSE KARO !" Prithvik challenged, hitting Dushashan in his guts.
Shakuni as expected ran away from there to Maharaj Shalya. Here Dilip was beating Duryodhan badly, the best thing about his mace fighting was his speed. Dilip kept hitting and hitting Duryodhan, not even giving him a chance to raise his mace his for defense. On the other hand Dushashan was terribly being beaten by Prithvik because, well Dushashan is Dushashan, what can you expect. Yuddhistir kept fighting off soldiers with his spears.
Here Shakuni was fighting off mere soldiers with Shalya.
"MAHARAJ SHALYA, SURYASTH HONE WALA HAI YEH BHALA LIJIYE AUR YUDDHISTIR PAR PRAHAR KIJIYE." Shakuni said.
"KAYARO KI BHATI MAI PRAHAR NAHI KARUNGA." Shalya said.
"AAPNE DURYODHAN KE PRATI SAMARPAN KIYA HAI, USKI VIJAY AAPKA DAAITWA HAI. PRAHAR KIJIYE MADRA RAJ PRAHAR KIJIYE" Shakuni ordered.
Shalya hesitantly took the spear and aimed it at Yuddhistir this was all seen by Uttar who ran towards Yuddhistir's direction. Karna, Arjun, Bheem, Nakul and Sehdev all were free now and therefore coming to Yuddhistir's aid.
Shalya threw the spear towards Yuddhistir but just then Bhism and other Maharathis blew the Shankh marking the end of the day. Everyone stopped fighting, Yuddhistir turned around and was shocked to see Uttar standing infront of him, his back facing him. Blood was oozing out from the spear that penetrated his body, the spear that was meant for him. The sun finally set with Uttar's life.

Draupadi was delighted to see the sons unharmed, but for some reason they all had grief and frown on their faces. But when the reason was revealed they all were in pure shock, seeing Uttar's dead body in Abhimanyu's arms Uttara broke into tears while Maharani Sudeshana fainted.
The Kauravas were celebrating their victory for the first day, while the Kuntiputras gave an honourable funeral to Uttar. Uttara was crying in Draupadi's embrace, Amarsri kept a hand on her shoulder.
"JIJI, MERA BHAI..." Uttara cried.
"UTTARA, UTTAR NE SABSE PEHLE VIRGATI PRAPT KI HAI. AAJ USE MRITYU NAHI MUKTI MILI HAI." Amarsri consoled.
"SAMAYE KE ANNT TAK KUNTI-VANSH UTTAR KA RINI RAHEGA, UTTARA." Draupadi said sobbing. This was the ultimate tragedy of Mahabharat, no-one ever won this war, everyone lost be it Pandav or Kaurav.
