Hear No Secrets

Taylor Lautner as Grant Clark

Kristin Kreuk as Chloe Lang

Chapter 19

Grant had his hand on my back as we walked out to the living room. His parents were sitting on one of the couches.

“You must be Chloe!” his mom said standing up.

“Hi,” I smiled.

She pulled me into a hug and his dad stood up too.

“Let’s sit down,” Grant whispered to me.

We both sat down on the couch across from his parents. His dad still hadn’t said anything.

“Grant talks about you a lot,” his mom said.

His dad suddenly interrupted, “I was very surprised to hear my son was dating someone like you.”

“Dad!” Grant said.

“What do you mean?” I asked his dad.

His dad chuckled a little, “You have to admit, you’re different.”

“Don’t do this now,” his mom said, “We just met her.”

“I wouldn’t say we’re that different actually,” I told him.

“You wouldn’t?” he asked, “Well I guess after his procedure it won’t matter.”

“Dad, stop!” Grant interrupted.

“No,” I said, “I don’t care that Grant’s deaf. It really doesn’t make a difference to me.”

“Of course it doesn’t,” his mom said, “Why would it? I’m so sorry.”

“You all need to stop,” Grant said, “I didn’t bring Chloe here so you can harass her. Can’t you guys at least be decent to her?”

“Son, I’m just trying to get to know her!” his dad said.

“You can do that without the insults!”

His mom leaned towards me, “This will probably last a while. What do you say we go to the kitchen?”

“Sounds good,” I smiled.

“Wait,” Grant said, “That’s not a good idea.”

I put my arms around his, “I’ll be fine.”

“Chloe…”

“I promise. It won’t be that bad. I can handle myself.”

“Chloe.”

“Trust me.”

He sighed, “Fine.”

“I’ll be back,” I smiled.

I got up with his mom and she led me to the kitchen. She went to the stove and started heating some water.

“They do this all the time,” she said, “Sorry you’re in the middle of it.”

“It doesn’t matter,” I shrugged, “At least I know the truth.”

“You must have been nervous coming here.”

“A little,” I admitted.

“Did Grant say anything about us?”

“Nothing out of ordinary. Why?”

“He likes to bend the truth sometimes.”

“What do you mean?” I asked.

“He’s done it since he was little. Even told the school a wild story about us one time.”
