because the night

RIVER sat atop his old bed, his eyes red and sore, his body tired as he remembered the previous night.

River rushed about the room, piling his items into the nearest bag that he'd found, Hayley having rushed from the house moments ago.

"It-it's not what-" Klaus began.

"It's not what it looks like?!" River questioned, tears flowing freely "Seriously?!"

"It just happened, River, I'm sorry" Klaus spoke shakily, his tears also flowing "It was an accident"

"No, Klaus, an accident is knocking over my favourite vase, sleeping with someone else is not an accident!" River snapped.

"I-I" Klaus stammered.

"What, then? Did she drug you?" River questioned "Tie you down, somehow make you, the Original Hybrid, the alpha male, you unable to fight back or control your own actions?"

"No" Klaus whispered.

"Exactly" River nodded.

River moved towards the door.

"River please-!" Klaus grabbed River's arm.

River whipped round, pulling his arm free from Klaus.

"Don't touch me!" River hissed "We are done, Niklaus"

River stormed from Klaus' home, leaving the hybrid to curl up on the floor.

River rubbed his eyes again, tears refusing to fall as he heard his friends downstairs. Caroline and Stefan were moving about the Salvatore household, cleaning up from the party, River was trying to establish some form of sanity as he prepared for his ex-lover to arrive.

Downstairs Caroline down the last sip of alcohol resting in a red solo cup before throwing it into the trash, footsteps sounding as Klaus moved into the room.

"Desperate times, I take it?" Klaus questioned.

"What are you doing here?" Caroline questioned.

Klaus looked a similar state to River, sore red eyes, flushed skin, but he still held that fake cover of emotion, of superiority.

"Not judging you, for starters, although if you are determined to get drunk, then perhaps I might recommend something a little more sanitary?" Klaus smirked.

Caroline picked up another cup, maintaining eye contact as she downed the contents.

"Well, then" Klaus sighed "You showed me"

"Shouldn't you be out cheating on River again? Or chasing Tyler to the ends of the earth?" Caroline asked "Or are there still some hopes and dreams you wanna crush around here?"

Klaus frowned angrily.

"Depends" Klaus ignored the first half of her question "Do you happen to know where the young Brutus is?"
