Words of Summer

There were words you’ve said to me,

Some made me sad, some made me happy,

“You seem.. alone,” the first words you uttered,

When you showed up under the tree where I sat every summer,

I watched you for a moment, trying to figure out who you were,

Your eyes were sad; your face was pale,

“Then make yourself useful and keep me company,” I said,

You seemed to digest the thought but you smiled and nodded,

That summer we became friends,

We exchanged words that never seem to end,

We spent time under that tree,

Every afternoon, you and me,

“Is there something wrong?” I asked you quick,

When you arrived one afternoon, trying hard to breathe,

You just smiled weakly and lay down on the grass,

With eyes closed, you rested your head on my lap,

“Can we stay like this for a while?” you asked,

“Okay.” I said and that’s when you opened your eyes,

I was looking down at you; you were looking up at me,

“Thank you. I don’t want to go yet.” You said quietly,

So we stayed like that for so a few hours,

We talked; you threw your jokes until we saw the stars,

We decided to go and bid our goodbyes.

You tried to smile as you told me, “We will always be under the same sky.”

My heart skipped but I smiled back at you,

We walked in separate ways like we always do,

But the next day I heard you were gone,

They took you somewhere out of reach, some place I cannot find,

Just like that, two summers slowly passed,

I decided to go to that same tree and there it was,

With a sigh, I sat, my back pressed on the trunk,

Until memories of you made my heart sunk,

“I miss you, Ash.” I uttered with so much pain,

Hoping my voice could travel to find you again,

I was startled when I heard someone at the other side of the tree,

So I got up and tiptoed quietly,

I looked and there I found the sleeping you,

As your right eye opened, you smiled and said,

“Guess what? I so missed you too.”
