"Y/N, you should come to practice today."

"Have you perfected your butterfly, Rin?"
The boy scoffed, "Seriously? I perfected that years ago."
You put your hands up, suppressing a giggle, "Of course you did, my apologies, Rin-Sama."
He sighed dramatically, "Anyways. Can you come?"
You hummed in reply, nodding your head as you chewed on your lunch, "I enjoy watching half naked men run a hand through their hair with water slowly dripping off their hard abs."
You clenched your free fist and Rin groaned about how you sounded like his younger sister.

After class, you met up with Rin by the pool entrance and stood in the bleachers as he changed and met up with the captain.
Samasuka had both a boys section of the school and a girls, but there was only one pool. The girls swim team practiced on different dates. Rin and you have been close friends ever since you transferred here, and for some reason he likes it when you come to his practices.
You always have some kind of feed back to give him afterwards, whether it be about him or someone else.
Though, you knew all about swimming. You were a mermaid after all. Of course Rin didn't know that, and you avoided the water at all costs when others were around.
You don't know how you managed to gain the ability to get human legs when you were dried up from the water, but when you were a child wandering around the shore, a huge typhoon hit and toppled dozens of boats.
There was one man in particular that you tried to help to safety, but by the time you managed to get to shore and trying to stay above water, he was already gone. You had laid on the shore with him all night, the rain and winds harsh. By morning, the sun came out and you dried, and instead of suffocating like you thought you would, your scales disappeared and your tail became feet and legs, then, they separated to make you look just like a normal human.
But you learned quick that if you went back in the water, you changed back immediately.
You were found in a rag a few days later, and I've been staying in a foster home ever since. You managed to get away with saying your family was killed in the typhoon. Maybe that's why Rin and you got along so well...
But you never really got close until he took you to his house to meet his mother and sister, and you saw a picture of his father.
The very same man you tried to save that day.
And suddenly everything changed.

"Hey! Y/N right?"
"Ah! Sorry, Mikoshiba-San."
"No problem. Hey your pretty cute... You are the girl Rin talks about all the time right?!"
"Oh, yes, that would be me!"
"Wow! I can see why he likes you so much!"
I sweat dropped, who is this guy?
"Momo!" A growling voice came behind you and the starry eyed boy in front of you slowly started to shrink.
"Oh, h-hey Rin!"
"Go do another hundred, you've been slacking off!"
"But there's only five minutes left of practice, Rin! Let me talk to Y/N! It's not fair you get all the pretty girls!" As Rin shoved him off you waved and the boy yelled out once more, "Call me!"

Rin came back over later with a very annoyed looking face, "Sorry about him."
"It's alright, Rin-Kun. He seems lovely."
"He sure is something alright."
You both turned to look through the glass towards the boy who was already making a scene around a bunch of first years.
"So, how's Nitori doing?" You decided to ask.
"He's getting better. I think he still doubts himself." Rin answered.
"He is starting to improve his strokes." You commented, hoping to bring in some positivitey.
"You seem to know a lot about swimming for someone who hates the water."
You shrugged, "You can read about this stuff you know, and watch videos."
Rin rose a brow, "I'm not buying it, come on."
"Huh?" You stood flabbergasted, and gasped as Rin picked you up, heading to the pool that only had two people left around it.
"R-Rin stop." You began, watching as the pool got closer.
"It'll be fun. I'll help you swim."
"No, Rin, seriously-" You began to struggle, thinking of all the horrors that would come about if he saw what you really were. If any one else did, there would no doubt be an outrage.
Freak! Monster!
"Rin stop!" I yelled.
"What are you so-"
"Put me down Rin! Rin!" Your voice cracked as you pounded at his back.
"It'll be fine, Y/N I got you."
"No! Let me go! I don't wanna go in! Stop it Rin! Stop it!" You screamed, and the boy quickly put you down. The second your feet touched the ground you ran the opposite way, straight out of the school.
You ran back to your empty dorm, climbing through the window so no one would see you through the halls.
You were lucky enough to get an extra room, which means you have no room mate.
You set your bag down and shut the window, going into the bathroom and turning on the water, letting the tub fill up.
You may avoid going in the water around people, but you still needed it.
You sighed heavily as you watched the water slowly rise, leaning against the side of the tub.
Your phone buzzed and you picked it up with a frown, seeing Rin's contact name come up.
You ignored the call, not wanting to speak to him at the moment. You can only imagine what his reaction would be, and they all turn out bad. Of course you still hoped maybe he'd accept you for who you really were, and you can tell him about how you tried to save his father.
Then again, he could get angry at you for that too.
He called again, and this time you just let it ring. You stopped the water when the tub was full and stripped, slowly slipping in your legs mended together and your scales emerged. You sighed in content, some how feeling better like this, with a tail and not two legs.
You listened to Rin's voice mail as you rested your eyes.
"Listen, Y/N, I'm really sorry for pushing you. I was a jerk, and uh... I'm sorry. I'm so sorry, just, please call me."
"Y/N, again I'm sorry for pushing you, I wanna make this up to you please call me, or something."
You groaned as the phone rang again. You picked it up and decided it'd be best to talk this over, since you couldn't avoid Rin forever.
"Moshi Moshi." You began.
"E-Ekia! Hey." Rin replied, "Listen. I'm so, so sorry. I-I didn't mean to scare you, or upset you... I... I just wanted to swim with you."
"It's okay Rin. It's not your fault." You sighed.
"How could you say that? I picked you up and didn't put you down when you told me too. I disrespected you- I- I knew about your past and I did that to you anyways."
My eyes widened, "No Rin. That's not why I got so upset." You flapped your tail around.
"Then... Why? And what's that sound? Are you in the bath?"
"Uh..."
Rin chuckled lightly, You could sense his embarrassment.
"Ano, Rin, how about you meet me tonight at the pool?"
"Huh? Why?"
"I'll explain to you... Everything. Okay?"
"Yeah... Sure."

Later that night, when the moon was out, you snuck into the pool and looked around, no one seemed to be around, Rin hadn't seemed to arrive yet either. You sighed in relief and decided you'd get a swim in before he came.
You slowly stripped and sighed, looking around one last time. After this, it could be the end of everything.
But you had to have hope.
You jumped into the pool, feeling as your legs mended together and your tail emerged once again. It felt really nice to relax, it almost felt like you could finally breath.
You swam around in the deep end for a little while, popping your head up you heard a slight screech.
"Hey."
You whipped around from looking side to side to behind you, where Rin stood in his sweats with an agitated look.
"Hello, Rin."
"Why are you in the pool? I thought-"
"I told you, it wasn't you, Rin." You cut him off and he sighed, running a hand through his hair.
"Then what was it?" He asked, obviously frustrated from confusion.
"This." You leaned back and pushed your tail up and out of the water. Rin's eyes widened drastically and he chocked on his spit.
When he composed himself, you made your way over to the shallow end and he stripped as well, his bathing suit underneath his pants. He dove in and emerged in front of you.
"Your kidding right? You didn't want to go into the pool earlier because your a... A mermaid?"
You laughed lightly, "Yes. Rin, I just want you to know that what I am doesn't change who I am. I may have lied about my past, but, I am still me. I'm still your best friend."
Rin smiled lightly, "I know Y/N..." His smile faded as he looked down to the water, "But, you didn't have to lie to me all these years. You could have told me right away."
"Thank you Rin."
He rose a brow, "For what?"
"For accepting me... I... I thought maybe you'd freak out and run away. Turn me in."
"Y/N, come on." Rin placed his hands on the sides of my shoulders as you looked into his eyes. You edged forward and he wrapped his arms around you completely.
"Your father. Your fathers the reason I came to the top side."
"What do you mean? You... You met him?"
"Not really. I'd always watch the people ashore... But I was never allowed to go close enough to where my tail would brush the sand. Until that Typhoon hit, I got stuck and couldn't get home.
"I saw your father as I was waiting at the bottom for it to pass. He was sinking, and fast.
I felt like I'd seen him before, with kids. I felt like maybe I could help him. So I lifted him up above the water, but the waves wouldn't give me a break. I tried so hard to get him to shore and save him but I was to small and weak, and scared. By the time we did get to shore... He was gone. I laid with him till it was completely over, and when the sun came out and dried me up, my tail turned into legs."
"Oh my god..." Rin mumbled, holding me tighter, "Thank you." His voice cracked and you held him just as tight, waiting for him to compose himself.
"Y/N?"
"Yes?" We separated slightly, and the boy smiled.
"I like you, no matter what you are Y/N. I'm in love with you."
"Rin..." You smiled brightly up at him, "I'm in love with you too."
He kissed you gently, but passionaitley. You slowly pulled apart and Rin placed his forehead on yours.
"Bet you my dolphin is faster." He began with a smirk.
"Oh P-lease! Rin I have a fishes. tail!" You rolled you eyes.
"Butterfly is faster." He tried again.
"Wanna bet?" You teased.
"Loser gets winner ice cream." Rin grinned.

Of course, you enjoyed your ice cream.
