The two boys pedal off, laughing and shouting.

LUTHER:      Flip, race ya to vanilla!

FLIP:      Woohooo!

EXT. THE ROAD - DAY

A black military staff car is slowly heading toward Maria's house.

INT. MARIA'S HOUSE/PORCH - DAY

Maria is watering her plants, stops upon seeing the approaching car. Dread creeps on her face.

THE CAR

The car pulls up in Maria's front yard. The MILITARY DRIVER opens the passenger door.

A grim looking COLONEL MATTHEW WHARTON, 45, in military uniform, steps out of the car. He is carrying a folded Gold Star Flag.

BACK TO MARIA

She does not say a word. Stares intently at Colonel Wharton.

INT. MARIA'S HOUSE/LIVING ROOM – DAY

Maria's shaking hand puts a cup of coffee on the side table, beside a framed family photo.
