i woke up to my alarm blasting throughout my room. i sat up rubbing my eyes and sighed. it's my birthday. i've never liked my birthday to be completely honest. my parents always worked late and i usually spent it alone. every year my best friend clay would buy me a cupcake with a candle in it. he would never go all out because he's the only person who truly knows how much i don't like my birthday.

i walked into school. a fake smile plastered on my face. only a selected few knew about my birthday. clay, hannah, sheri, and alex. they wouldn't make a huge deal about it but they always wondered why i never did anything for it and i always shrugged in response.

"hello birthday girl" clay greeted pulling me out of my trance. "happy birthday" he added. "thanks" I replied shutting my locker. we continued walking down the hall together. "hey y/n" i turned in the direction of my name and smiled. jeff atkins. my boyfriend of almost two months now. "hey" i greeted he placed his arm around me. "i'll see you later y/n. should we go with chocolate this year or stick with vanilla?" he asked "what?" jeff asked confused. if you're wondering no, jeff does not know about my birthday and i would love to keep it that way. he would try and go all out and i really don't want that. "it's nothing jeff" i spoke turning my attention back to clay. "vanilla it's plain and boring just like this horrible day" i responded storming off in a different direction.

throughout this entire class my phone blew up with a bunch of texts from jeff. one message in particular caught my eye.

jeff
look you don't have to respond if you don't want to but
clay told me it's your birthday. he also told me how much you hate
it. he told me you don't want it to be special which is fine but i
wish you would of told me. happy birthday angel.

i sighed, he was adorable. i decided to respond. he shouldn't of heard this from clay. i should have told him myself. i hid my phone on my lap, slightly under my desk and typed back.

me
thank you. i'm so sorry you heard that from clay. i should
have told you myself and i was afraid you would make a big
deal out of my birthday when all i really want is not to be alone
tonight. so if you want come to my place after school?

jeff
anything for you princess

i was at home putting some things away when i heard the doorbell ring. i went down the stairs and opened the door seeing clay and jeff standing there. clay with his usual brown paper bag in his hand and jeff holding another brown paper bag. i let them both inside and they both placed the bags on the kitchen counter. "so i got vanilla" clay said taking the cupcake out of the bag and opening the small container. "but instead of blue icing like last year i went with purple" i laughed and rolled my eyes. "they ran out of blue" clay mumbled. i hugged him "thank you" "happy birthday" he smiled. i blew out the candle and ate my cupcake.

"so what's in the second bag?" i asked turning my attention towards jeff. he smiled "open it" i took the bag into my hands and opened it pulling out another cupcake container. i looked at him confused. "it's a chocolate one because your birthday shouldn't be plain and boring" jeff explained. my smile grew bigger and i wrapped my arms around his neck and kissed his cheek. "thank you, i should have told you about my birthday sooner" i said opening the second cupcake container. jeff just smiled in return.

the rest of the night the three of us watched my favorite movies and ate my favorite foods. and for once i didn't feel so alone on my birthday.

a/n: i love jeff atkins ok bye.
