Paying the Price

As your eyesight was temporarily taken away from you, you could only feel worry seep into your veins. Since you couldn't see what was going on, all you could do was listen to the awful screams produced from the two twins. If someone was having their soul ripped from their body, you could easily imagine that individual sounding like this. You truly wished that the brothers had stayed at the gates. Originally, it was just so you could have some peace and quiet for a bit, but now your reason had entirely changed. Right now, you just wanted their cries to stop and to know what was happening.

Sure, there were times when you had enough of the twins and desired them to leave you alone. In fact those moments were quite frequent, but you would never wish this pain on them. Despite their twisted nature, you couldn't help but keep Diamond's words from the inn in your mind. Secretly, you couldn't deny the fact that you were drawn to the task of solving the challenge that was the brothers. Maybe, you would never be able to, but did that really bother you? In reality, it didn't. Rather, you found yourself never bored with the two. One day, they would act a certain way, and in the next moment, they would be behaving in another manner.

Thus, you couldn't just let them suffer like this. You were far too intrigued by them; you cared for them too much despite their flaws, for their flaws only added to their interesting personalities. With this in mind, you tried to open your eyes while you shielded them with your right hand. Sadly, you had to immediately close them again, since it was still too bright. Honestly, it felt like you were locked in a solid white box while only screams gave you company. It was just utterly awful, since those screams belonged to the brothers.

When at last the light began to die down, you opened your eyes slowly and squinted to see what had happened to them. You could see the woman, standing tall at a height of five feet and nine inches, beginning to go towards the elderly man. With her wooden staff in her left hand, she supported some of her weight on it while whispering to him. Frankly, you weren't concerned with what they were saying, as your attention centered on the area where the woman once was.

Due to your still weak eyesight, you thought you were simply imagining things. The sight before you couldn't be right; it just couldn't be. Gulping, you took a few more steps forward, but soon found that you couldn't take anymore. Hands trembling, you blinked a couple of times and discovered the same image in front of you. Your eyes by now had fully recovered from the blinding light, and you couldn't deny what you saw in front of you.

Standing up slowly from the grass covered earth, they turned to face you, as confusion and fear was written across their face. They looked down at their hands and fingernails, which were long and painted blue. Their attention proceeded to move onto the locks of blue with red tips before their fingers ran over their face. Red eyes with purple flecks followed the movement of the hands, as a painted blue diamond decorated their right eye. Clothing wise, they had on a grey and white vertical striped shirt while black pants and red combat boots with purple laces covered their lower half. Furthermore, their saber rested on their left hip. Lastly, a silver hoop rested in their left ear and a gold one in their right.

"My dear lady, what has happened to us? I know my brother is still alive, but I can't see him anywhere. Where is he, and why do I look like this? Where is Diamond? Please, tell me," he pleaded desperately, as his hands began to tremble horribly.

Words felt trapped in your throat, as you stared at the quaking male. Thus, instead of answering him, you basically ran forward before wrapping your arms around his waist. You could only guess that the price they had to pay was their individual forms. Somehow that woman had managed to combine them into one body, which shared their two personalities. While one of the brothers was awake, the other would be dormant. Just thinking about the outcome caused you to tighten your grip on the male, as you pressed your face into his chest. This price was too much, and seeing Heart in such a distressed state pained you greatly. Feeling his arms wrap around, you didn't protest, as he pulled you closer.

Resting his forehead on your right shoulder, you could hear him mutter, "I want my brother back, my dear lady. This wasn't supposed to happen. I know he's alive, but why then does it still feel like I lost him? Please, my dear lady, I want him back."

Something wet dripped onto your shoulder before staining your shirt. You knew what it was, and you wanted to tell him that he would see his brother again, but even you didn't know. All you could do was keep your arms around the breaking male and try to keep yourself from tearing up.

"As I'm sure you noticed both of them have been combined into one body. This change will remain intact until you exit Rinned. Thus, it is only temporary unless you wish to stay in the city permanently," the woman announced to the two of you.

Hearing her voice, you were reminded of the fact that you now wanted to punch her hard in the face. Couldn't she tell that this price was like killing one of the brothers? You didn't think that either of the two had been separated from each other for too long a period of time. Now for them to be forced into one body, not being able to see if the other was alive, was most likely torture for them. In fact, you knew it was because of Heart's current state. The only reassurance was that it was temporary, but that information wasn't enough to console Heart at the moment. Instead, he just collapsed onto his knees, bringing you with him.

Allowing him to just clutch at your upper arms while he moved his face over to your left shoulder, you wrapped your left arm around his waist and brushed your right fingers through his now blue and red locks. Turning your face towards the woman, you saw in her expression that she held no sympathy. Rather, it seemed like she was satisfied with her punishment, as though outsiders should be treated with cruelty should they wish to come into her beloved city. If it weren't for your desire to finish your journey and for the brothers' sacrifice, you would've attacked the woman immediately.

Doing your best to keep your voice level, you questioned, "May we go in now?"

Both the woman and the elderly man nodded before stepping aside and permitting the massive wrought iron gates to open. With them open, you focused back on Heart, who was still in a vulnerable position. Sighing lightly, you moved your right and left hands up to his face. Lifting his head up from your left shoulder, you locked your (e/c) gaze with him. You had to take a breath, though, due to witnessing his tear streaked face. Forcing yourself to not break down at the sight of his countenance, you took both of your thumbs and wiped away his tears.

Giving him a reassuring smile despite the sadness that desired to take over your eyes, you uttered, "We'll get him back, Heart. We'll go into that city and find the answers to the song. Before you know it, we'll be back out here, and you'll see your brother again."

Bringing up both of his hands, he secured them around your wrists and replied, "Thank you, my dear lady, for taking care of us."

Only being able to smile in response, you nodded and went to get up. After standing up with you, Heart released his grip on your wrists and wiped away his remaining tears. His face paint was now smeared, but you doubted he cared. Thus, you two made your way towards the opened gates. Both of you ignored the woman and elderly man. Right now, you needed to get in and out of the city, so you could return the brothers to their original state. Moreover, you couldn't help but blame yourself for this result. If you had convinced the brothers to stay by the gates, this wouldn't have happened. You should've tried harder. Now, you had to watch the brothers suffer in that new form of theirs, and it was causing you to potentially have your own breakdown.

Entering the city of Rinned, you looked at the surrounding flower fields and gazebos, as you heard a stream in the distance. If it weren't for the current situation, you would've enjoyed this scenery. In fact you did when you first saw it, but now you couldn't look at it the same. This city had cost the brothers something so horrendous that you were still having trouble imagining the pain Heart was experiencing at the moment. If anything, this city's beauty was mocking you two.

As you went to take another step forward, though, the elderly man called out, "Outsiders must visit the Queen's estate upon arrival. Follow the road you're on, and it will lead you directly to her house."

Such information barely reached your ears, as the gates closed behind you two. Regardless, you supposed that you might as well go there, since this queen might have information on Kinete. Granted, you supposedly needed to blow on a whistle and turn wings. At least that's what the song stated. Thus, if she knew anything, you would make sure to get the information out of her. You had just entered this city, and already you were done with it.

Glancing over at Heart, you felt your heartstrings being tugged at again. There was no smirk on his face or any sign of his usual energy present. He hadn't even attempted to make a perverted remark or tease you; he was still completely dejected. Staring back to the path ahead of you, you thought back to his last statement. You were never the one taking care of them. They were the ones who aided you in the fight against Chroma, they were the ones who chased after you through Umelius's territory and aided you in getting to Valinquinia, and they were the ones who protected you throughout this crazy journey. If anything, they were the ones who were taking care of you despite their contradictory ways.
