Small Comfort

  Not wanting to lose anytime, you convinced the brothers to take control of the reins while Iris helped you with your wounds. Moreover, the brothers didn't need to worry about getting lost, since Iris mentioned that there were no splits in the path until after the inn. Granted, convincing them was anything but easy. The moment Diamond had set you in the back of the wagon; he went to patch up your shoulder wound. Even though you were losing quite a bit of blood, you slapped his hands away while a light blush painted your cheeks. You still had your pride, and you refused to let the male remove your shirt.

Thus, after a few minutes of arguing and getting nowhere, Diamond finally listened to your wishes and allowed Iris to help you with your injuries. Heart and him climbed on the front of the wagon and began the trip to the inn. Not only did you want to move along but also a comfortable bed sounded nice, especially if you had to deal with more thieves later.

Occasionally, you would wince at the disinfectant you had Iris use on you. She didn't have any herself, so you pulled out the bottle from your bag. Thankfully, you had remembered to bring a first aid kit. It was odd, though, as you sat in the back of the wagon with Iris tending to your wounded body. You had asked her to remain by the wagon and stay safe, but you were nearly killed. Some part of you, regardless of your order, would've thought her to at least go retrieve the brothers or attack the man while he had his back to her. When she performed neither of these actions, you couldn't help but question the girl in front of you.

She had stated that having protectors on the roads would be handy, so why would she sit back if something went wrong? The brothers and you were capable of handling combat situations, but you still had your limitations. You could understand her hesitation had she been surrounded herself or if there were multiple men about to kill you. There was only one, though, and he had been defenseless against her while he pinned you to the ground. From your perspective, the man seemed to have forgotten about her existence, meaning she could've have retrieved one of your daggers and stabbed the man in the back.

Maybe she had been too petrified to act, since it was her first encounter with the thieves. She might've been frozen with fear, only thinking of staying alive for sisters back on their farm. There was that possibility, but Iris didn't look to be a girl who cowered in fear while a companion was being attacked. Besides, her facial expression back when you told her to stay safe wasn't filled with absolute terror. It appeared more calculative than anything. For now, though, she was your guide, and you would give her the benefit of the doubt. Her actions would just cause you to remain suspicious of her.

Feeling your left black bra strap being placed back onto your shoulder, you focused your attention back on Iris to see that she had completed her task of wrapping your shoulder. Crimson soon decorated the white strips of cloth, but at least your wound was bandaged now. Since your blue shirt was ruined, you pulled out a beige tank top. Iris helped you lift it over your head and pull it down due to your shoulder erupting with pain if you lifted it too high. Once your shirt was on, Iris worked on the small scratches covering your arms and legs from your impacts to the dirt path. Before she could finish working on those injuries and move onto the scratch on your left cheek, you drifted off into unconsciousness. You had lost quite a bit of blood, and your body needed rest.

                                                                              ~~~~~~~~~~
Feeling something soft under your fingertips, you went to nuzzle deeper into the object's embrace. Upon doing so, though, pain shot through your entire left side, as you went to lie on your left shoulder. You had forgotten about the wound you received earlier. Rolling quickly onto your back, you blinked your (e/c) eyes a few times, adjusting to the rays of light that were entering your location. Personally, you wanted to rub your shoulder while doing so, but you had a feeling that such an action would only cause more pain.
Glancing upward, you stared at an angled wooden ceiling, which had wooden beams going across it. This ceiling went up higher on your right and lower on your left. Trailing the ascending part of the wood, your eyes soon traveled down the wall connected to that side of the ceiling. Finding the light source, you noticed opened wooden shutters, which revealed the sky outside. Due to the light blue color of the sky, you assumed it to be around mid-morning, meaning that you had been asleep for over twelve hours.
Normally, you would've been shocked at such a discovery, but currently you were just tired. Despite your long sleep, your body ached from yesterday night, and you just wanted to curl up into the soft white sheets of the bed. At the same time, you wanted to know where your three traveling companions were. There was only your bed in the room, so you presumed that they had bought rooms for themselves, or the brothers were just being courteous of your condition. Iris would probably have her own room, though.
Utilizing your right arm, you slowly managed to push yourself into a sitting position on the bed. Leaning your back against the soft white pillows, you pulled both the sheets and the mustard colored bedspread, with diamond and four-cornered star designs, up closer to you. Now having a better view of the room you were in, you noticed that there were only two other pieces of furniture besides the bed in the room. Next to the wooden door, which was facing the bed, was a circular wooden stand with a metal basin on it. Accompanying the wash bowl was a beige colored cloth as well as a metal jug. This stand was on the right side of the door. Furthermore, on your left side was a wooden nightstand. It had a simple drawer while a book rested atop it.
Seeing as no one was around, you reached over carefully with your left arm. It hurt still, but you thought you might discover the contents of the book. When your fingers grasped the text, you brought it over to yourself while your left arm relaxed from the effort. Opening the book with your right hand, you flipped through the pages, since you saw no writing on the cover or binding. Upon doing so, you discovered that the pages were filled with various cooking recipes. Most of them, though, concerned the topic of cakes and other sweet treats. Examining the writing closely, you realized that this book must belong to Heart. You had seen the male's writing on a couple of occasions, and this book had identical writing in it. Frankly, you couldn't deny that the man knew how to write in cursive exceptionally well; it was like you were looking at a work of art.
Stopping on the last page with text, you found that it discussed a dish you had never heard of: Triber Bread. Glancing over the ingredients, you found your mouth watering at the delicious sounding dessert. Moreover, it wasn't helping that you hadn't eaten since yesterday afternoon. When your stomach growled, you closed the book, thinking it best not to tempt your desires at the moment. Making yourself hungry, when you didn't want to move, wouldn't help your current situation.
Setting the book on the bedspread beside you, you leaned back more into the pillows. Getting comfortable, you gazed outside the window and enjoyed the slight breeze that entered your room. You wanted to set out again, but resting for another few hours wouldn't hurt. Besides, the brothers and Iris required some proper sleep as well. Your attention, however, turned to the door when you heard the knob turning. Soon, the familiar figure of Diamond entered the space, bringing a tray of food in with him. Shutting the door behind him, he sat on the left side of the bed and kept the tray on his lap.
"Are you feeling better?" he questioned, as he picked up the silver fork.
"Yeah, where are the others?" you inquired, noticing a square piece of cake covered in whipped crème frosting while a few sausages and a glass of ice water were on the side.
"Iris is currently sleeping in her own room while Heart is watching her."
Raising one of your eyebrows at this, Diamond noted your puzzlement and explained, "We don't trust her, so we're making sure she stays in her room. Why were you worried?"
"Tch, no, I was just hoping you two would turn your attention on someone else. It would give me a break from you two clowns. Regardless, I'm assuming that we're in the inn Iris mentioned, though, what time did we arrive?"
His typical smile working its way onto his lips, he replied, "We arrived a little after eight this morning, so around the time Iris told us last evening. Right now, it is nine in the morning."
Just nodding in reply, you watched as he stabbed the fork into the cake and held it out for you to eat. You wanted to reject the offer of food and maintain your stubbornness, but your stomach had other plans. Giving a low grumble, it signaled that it had no patience for your desired course of action. Muttering a few curses, you opened your mouth and permitted the male to feed you, since he most likely wasn't going to let you have access to the tray itself. When the slice of cake touched your tongue, you tasted the three different berry jams on each layer of vanilla cake: blackberry, blueberry and raspberry. A small smile gracing your lips, as you remembered the recipe in the book and realized that the Triber Bread was the cake being fed to you. You now knew why Heart couldn't resist writing down this recipe.
Soft hints of vanilla melted in your mouth, as though you were biting into a vanilla ice cream bar on a hot summer day. The different jams tasted like the berries had been converted into their new form that day, each reminding you of picking one of the small delights fresh off the bush and popping it into your mouth. To top it off, the whipped crème ran over the body of the cake like smooth silk. All in all you couldn't deny another bite of the delicacy despite the fact that Diamond was feeding it to you.
