"Beep Beep Beep." The machine whirs as I sit there holding his hand

"You're gonna be okay Farkle. You'll find a way like you always do." I say crying a little

"It's going to be all right. You're going to be fine." Ranger Rick says

"Thanks for encouraging him." I say wiping tears away

"Oh, I'm not worried about Farkle. It's you I'm worried about. I mean, he is a genius after all." Then he starts to stare at me intensely.

"What do you want Ranger Rick." I say continuing to wipe tears.

"It's just ... I've never ... I've never seen you cry before."

"Yippie." I reply sarcastically. "Congratulations."

He rolls his eyes at my comment.

"He's gonna be okay you know. He's just uncon- ." He says

"Listen Ranger. I don't want your words of sentimentality." I say backing up. "You can't make me feel better so don't try. This is my fault and I'm ready to take the-"

"It's not your fault." The Ranger says putting his hands on my shoulder. I stare in to his green eyes a cold long stare and walk back to Farkle's bedside. "There's nothing you could've done to stop Gabe. You tried and that's all that matters." He says standing behind my chair

"I said I didn't care for your words of reassurance Sundance."

"You know I don't know why you hate me so much but I'm really trying here-" he says walking away. I walk up to him and turn him around.

"I don't hate you Ranger." I could never hate you.

"Your a good guy Lucas." I say and start to walk out

"Maya!" As he says my name I spin around. "You called me Lucas." He says smiling

"Don't get to used to it, Lucas." I say and walk away

I walk home and throw down my bag, as I spot a bright pink post it note from my parents taped on the fridge.

The Note:

Dear Maya,
It's Mom and Shawn.
We're flying to Nebraska.
Your aunt has become sick,
and needs someone to care
for her. We were going to
have your grandmother watch you,
but since your 17, we have
decided your old enough to stay
by yourself. You may invite
Riley over to stay with you for
the time being.
We are trusting you.
We love you.

I do a little happy dance, because this is the first time they will leave me alone for so long. I decide to call Riley and she comes over shortly. With the Ranger.
