“You are like a sunflower glowing under the morning sun, with the radiance of a fish's skin under the moonlight.”

I felt myself smile as I heard him. I was used to this by now; it was Walter after all. His compliments were always so...innovative. One time, I heard him tell her she was as alluring as a basket of fruits. So, yeah, that was just Walter for you.

The recipient of his grand compliments, however, was always so pleased with them. And judging by her smile, face flushed, it was clear that this time was no exception as well.

“Oh, Walter,” she gushed, fondly caressing his cheek. “You're too sweet.”

I gave an exaggerated cough when they shared a kiss. “Ok, you two, there's still a kid in this house.” I gestured to myself at that. “But if you really want some alone time, there are a bunch of free rooms in the house.” I finished with a wink.

They immediately broke apart at that, the both of them looking like two kids who just got caught sharing a kiss – except in this case, they were two adults.

Carla was the first to speak up, whacking my head as she did. “You can't just say things like that.”

“But it was just advice,” I offered  oh-so-innocently, earning myself another whack, and leaving me to give an exaggerated cry.

She, however, just chuckled, with Walter watching us in amusement, used to our antics by now.

After a minute more of teasing the couple, I was heading off with: “well, I’ll just leave you to your thing.”

Walter had coughed awkwardly at that, with Carla saying something along the lines of: ‘how did I raise such a crazy girl?’

I couldn't quite help the laugh that escaped my lips at that.

Yeah, so my ship finally sailed; Carla and Walter were together now, and it made me happier than you could ever know. Carla's first husband died about ten years into their marriage, and she hadn't been with anyone ever since.

But now, that had all changed – and it was clear that she was very happy with Walter.

Talking about happy people, I smiled as I watched dad looking between the two shirts in his hands, about half a dozen more, sprawled on the bed.

“I like the blue one,” I piped up, making him stop from his inspection to stare at the new entry to his room.

The smile that lit up his features was instant. “You think so?”

“Of course! It looks great. And besides, you take after me – we always look great in anything we wear.”

He squinted in mock confusion, asking, “isn't it the other way around? You take after me.”

“god, dad, can't you even let a girl have her moment?”

He laughed at that, with me joining in soon after.

“Sweetie,” he started following the decline of our mirth. And now, he had something of a serious look to him as his eyes peered meaningfully into mine. “If you're not okay with this, or any of it, I promise I won’t..."

“Hey,” I cut in, smiling softly at him. “I know you're worried that if it doesn't work out, I'll be disappointed or hurt. But you don't have to be. Whatever happens, it wouldn't change how I feel about either of you, ok?”
