The year was 1968. I, Beyonce Knowles, was 23 years old. I was working as a maid for a wealthy, black couple who resided in Los Angeles, CA. The husband, Harry Belafonte was a well known actor. And his wife, Onika Maraj-Belafonte was the lead singer of a very popular Motown Records girl group.

Mr. Belafonte was a very handsome man. And though his wife, Onika, was one of the most beautiful black women in entertainment, he just couldn't seem to stay faithful to her. I never knew he was the adulterous type until I caught him in the act one day.
It was a Wednesday afternoon. Mrs. Belafonte wasn't home because she and her girl group were taping a performance for Dick Clark's American Bandstand show. Mr. Belafonte had given me some money to go grocery shopping. But I left the grocery list on the kitchen counter by mistake! I had to leave the supermarket and go all the way back to the house.
The Belafonte's trusted me well enough to give me my own key to their mansion. So I let myself back in to get the grocery list. When I grabbed it, I heard a woman scream. Even though I knew Mrs. Belafonte wasn't supposed to be home, I still ran upstairs to make sure she hadn't come back and hurt herself or something.
