CHAPTER 36- Reality 

Demi's POV

Everything was so crazy now, I was meeting with so many lawyers and the adoption services. It wasn't a clear cut case. Apparently, somehow, Mac's 'aunt' did have a case against me. I was keeping Mac at my side every moment of the day, scared that if I couldn't see her for even a moment, she'd be taken away from me.

It was around three am, Nick was sleeping peacefully while I stared up at the ceiling. I know that there was nothing I could do right now, but that didn't mean I wasn't thinking of all the things I could do tomorrow. I wanted to take Mac away, out of the country somewhere, a place she could live a normal life and not have to worry about things that five year olds shouldn't worry about. Tomorrow was our one year adoption, so I wanted to make it special, but I didn't have a lot of time with all of the meetings I'd been having.

"Demi? Why are you awake?"

I looked down to see a bleary-eyed Nick looking down at me, "I can't stop thinking Nick."

He shifted towards me and pulled me down against his chest, "What are you thinking about?"

I shook my head, feeling tears coming to my eyes as my voice cracked, "I can't lose her Nick."

Nick sighed and ran his fingers through my hair, "Don't worry Dems, I'm sure it'll all be f-"

"If you say fine I'm going to hit you." I whispered, "You can't promise me anything right now."

He looked down at me, "Look, you're an amazing mom. Any judge will see that. Plus, with Mac's testimony it's a slam dunk. She'll be back in your arms for good and you'll be wondering why you ever worried in the first place."

"But what if-"

"If the decision somehow doesn't go our way, we will do anything and everything in our power to change that. We will dig and dig and dig until something pops up. Okay? Baby you need your strength for tomorrow because I know Mac's really excited. Come on, let's go to bed."

I nodded and snuggled into his arms, "I love you."

I felt his lips press against my temple, "I love you too."

The next morning I woke up early and kissed Nick's lips sweetly, then walked into Mac's room. Her hair was messy and all over her pillow as she slept, mouth wide open and drool coming out the side. I smiled at the sight, taking it all in just in case I'd never get to see it again. Even if this ordeal did go my way, I would never take this sight for granted again.

"Babygirl." I whispered, and crouched beside her bed, poking her side, "Wake up!"

She scrunched up her nose adorably, "No."

I giggled and began to tickle her, running my fingers up and down her sides, "Wake up!"

"Nooooo momma!" Mac groaned, squirming away from my fingers, "I'm uppp!"

I kissed her nose, "Come on, we've got a busy day today!"

She sat up and rubbed her eyes, reaching for me. I wrapped my arms around her and pulled her into my chest, holding her tightly there in my safe embrace.

"What's gonna happen?" She whispered, and I could feel my heart crack.

"I'm never letting go of you baby." I whispered, "Ever."

Once I got Mac dressed and downstairs, we went out to our little diner for some breakfast. We'd come here a lot when she was first adjusting to my house, but hadn't been here in a long time, so it was good to be back.

"Well here's my favorite girl."

I looked up to see the waitress smiling at Mac. It was the same one that Mac had asked me about her 'battle scars', it was adorable to watch Mac's face light up as she gave her, Sam, a hug.

"I've missed seeing you two around here." Sam noted, as she took our orders.

"We've been a little busy." I said, "Having a lot of fun, right Mac?"

"Right!"

I smiled, "It's the anniversary of one year since I adopted her so I thought we'd start with the basics."

Sam smiled, "Well I'll be right back with your food and drinks, it was good to see you again."

"You too!" I gave her my signature smile, then turned to Mac, "So we're gonna have a ton of fun today babygirl."

She sat up a bit straighter, "What are we doing Momma?"

I smiled, "Don't you remember where we went for your birthday?"

The effect was instant as her entire face lit up, she clapped happily, "Really momma?"

I nodded, "Now there's going to be a lot more people there than last time, ones that you don't know, but we're gonna have a lot of fun I promise."

Mac smiled big at me, and it only widened when our food was brought out. We ate, her rather quickly in her excitement, then got in the car to begin the long drive to the amusement park.

"Momma look!" She squealed, as the looming sight of the tall roller coasters came into view.

"Yeah baby! We're gonna go on that!" I said, smiling big at her reaction. I loved that she loved Disney. As a kid I didn't get to go there very much so I wanted to have her enjoy the experience as often as possible. We got out of the car and I held onto Mac's hand as we walked through security and picked up our 'skip the line' passes. A security guard was going to be following us to prevent fans from coming up to us since I wanted to spend the day focused on Mac.

"Momma can we go on that one?!" Mac had said that at about every single ride we passed, and of course, if she was tall enough, I said yes. It was hard, to not think about the fact that this might be my last trip to Disney land with her, so I wanted to make it special, and not have her sad at any moment. 

Soon though, the day was over, and we both had to go back to our hard hitting reality that I tried so hard to shelter from Mac, that we might eventually be separated forever. 

        As I tucked her in that night, she grabbed my hands, "Momma?" 

I smiled down at her, "Yeah babygirl?" 

She smiled back, "Thank you." 

I furrowed my brow, "For what babe?" 

She sighed, "Because you gave me a mommy, and a daddy, and you loved me." 

Even though she was only five, it seemed like she was much older than her age, and tears came to my eyes as I leaned down to hug her. 

"You gave me things too Mac. You gave me a daughter, and someone to come home to at night, and someone to love. I love you so much babygirl, and no matter what happens I never want you to forget that." 

She smiled, "Always?" 

I kissed her nose, "Always."
