We've all gathered back at Wing's place. I suppose it's become our unofficial home base. Since Hisoka agreed to fight Gon, I've noticed his determination has nearly doubled.

"Today, we will finally begin to train in Hatsu. Once you master Hatsu, you will have learned the basic Nen principles. After that, you will need to work on developing your individual Nen style," Wing pauses as his students express their affirmation, "Hatsu is the technique by which you control your Nen. It is the culmination of Nen, and there are six distinct categories."

He goes on to explain each, "Enhancers are able to strengthen objects. Emitters can propel their aura. Transmuters can later their aura's qualities. Conjuerers are able to manifest their aura. Manipulators can use their aura to control objects and creatures. Specialists are those with a special aura that doesn't fall within the other five classes. The key is to find the power that suits you."

All of us listen with rapt attention. I've had thoughts of developing my own abilities (mostly based on what I think is both aesthetically cool and productive), but my plans would be difficult to bring to fruition as easily. I appreciate nothing if not efficiency... and Killua... and Korako... and Gon... I'm going to stop this train of thought and focus on what Wing says before I zone out completely.

"Nen is linked to individual ability, with two areas of particular prominence. The first would be your natural potential. The second would be potential refined later in life. Gon-kun, for example, was born with a flexible, springy body. his acute senses were the product of a childhood spent in nature.

"From the moment of birth, your Nen aura falls within one of the six categories. While rare, it is possible for your Nen aura to later change types. If you attempt to learn an ability that does not fit your inclination, you will find it very difficult. This hexagon," which he draws on the white board, "depicts the relationship among the six categories. The closer a class is to your own, the higher your compatibility to learn it. If your are born with an aura of the Enhancer category, you will find Enhancer abilities easiest to learn and master. And the adjacent Transmuter and Emitter classes will also be easy to learn. On the other hand, the Specialist class, which is farthest away, would be difficult.

"To illustrate, I'll use skills that you've seen for yourselves. Hisoka was able to change his aura into a rubbery substance. This would be a Transmuter ability. Gido used his tops and body as weapons by making them spin faster, which would be an Enhancer power. However, since using so many tops as weapons also requires Manipulator skill, he wasn't as successful. As for Kastro, his Tiger Bite was incredibly strong. Had he mastered it, he would have been among the strongest Nen users. I believe that his aura fell into the Enhancer class. However, he focused his energy on the power to create a double, which is a Conjurer skill. And he also required a Manipulator ability to control the double. Both of those are relatively far from the Enhancer category."

Gon, thankfully, breaks up the lecture a bit, "So neither was compatible with an Enhancer type?"

"Indeed, it requires a great deal of work and natural talent to learn an incompatible ability. And as a result, he squandered most of his Nen potential," Wing replies.

Killua speaks up this time, "So he made the wrong choice."

Zushi chimes in, "He was a great fighter... It's a shame."

"What stops someone from mastering the ability directly adjacent to their own. For instance, Kastro was an Enhancer, so if he took the time to master being an Emitter and then moved on to being a Transmitter, would it be easier on him?" I say before answering my own question, "Although, you did say Nen abilities are heavily reliant on the talent you're born with."
