When she saw that comment, Su Tang had to stifle her laughter and quickly turn away so she could seriously look at the other women. After giving her greeting, the young woman surnamed Bai stood aside and looked up at Su Tang with eyes full of longing.
Su Tang sighed and asked Mrs. Li, "Why did this Ms. Bai sell herself?"
Mrs. Li immediately explained, "In her family, besides her, there are two younger brothers. Her parents have always been in poor health, so she had always supported the family by herself. However, now her little brother is old enough to marry a wife but has no money, so she sold herself for his sake."
Su Tang heard that and glanced at the young woman with obscure eyes. A woman who just wanted to support her little brother at any cost, it was really a pity.
"How much is she?" Su Tang had already more or less decided, and asked.
Mrs. Li said hurriedly, "Ah, well, both of these girls cost ten taels of silver."
"What about the mother and daughter?" Su Tang asked.

The whole time Mrs. Li had provided food and clothing for the mother-daughter pair and, although she couldn't say she had treated them especially well, she at least didn't let them starve to death. Which meant she had actually spent more on them than the fifteen taels they had initially cost. Unfortunately, so far no one had been willing to buy both of them, and the only people that had shown any interest seemed to have other intentions. Mostly, they had other thoughts about her daughter.
Zhang Cuilan was a mother, so how could she be willing to let her daughter suffer like that? Even if she had to become a servant and went on to marry a slave, she had always planned to live a serious and upright life. She had no intention to sell her daughter to some old man.
Mrs. Li was also a mother, and she understood what the other woman was thinking, which was why she was always trying to introduce the two to reliable buyers but, unfortunately, most of those buyers wouldn't even ask about the price before turning on their heels and leaving.
So now that she heard Su Tang asking for a price, she didn't try to play any tricks and just directly quoted the exact amount she had spent when she bought them.
Su Tang nodded when she heard this, took another look at the mother and daughter, and then finally said to Mrs. Li, "I'll take them!"
In the end, Su Tang decided to buy Zhang Cuilan and her daughter. Mrs. Li was surprised and asked, "Miss, you want to buy both of them?"
Su Tang didn't look like she came from a rich family and Mrs. Li knew that buying an extra little girl like this was tantamount to wasting five taels of silver, so she felt a bit worried.
