"Hey Darci," Wanda said coming up to me. It was late at night and most of us were asleep in the tower.
"What's up kiddo?" I asked. I had taken her and Pietro in years ago when the bombs hit their apartment building. I lived in the apartment above theirs, I was doing doctors without borders and going to school. I was 16 at the time, my IQ matched Tony's. They were ten. I took them in and made sure they had food every day and that we had blankets for the winter. They don't know some of the things I did to ensure they ate every day, including selling my own body.
When we were older HYDRA took us, we were the only ones to survive the experiments. I still remembered meeting them clearly. They had been hiding under the family bed and I fell through the floor and landed on the floor by the bed and the bomb. I did my best to keep them calm while help came to us and I blocked their view of the bomb.
"I can't find Pietro and I heard some banging around in his room, I'm worried," Wanda said.
"I'll find him," I said.
"Darci." I turned to face. "I think he's been having nightmares."
"I'll take care of him Wanda, you guys are like my kids to me," I pulled her into a hug which she returned. I then left to find her brother, I knew where he'd be. The roof. After years of being kept in a cell that was just big enough to stand and lay down in he liked open spaces.
Once on the roof I looked in the shadows knowing he would want to be left alone. I found him leaning up against the ventaliation shaft. His face was in one of his hands, the other arm wrapped around his waist. "Pietro?" I asked kneeling in front of him placing one of my hands on his shoulder. I could feel him shaking slightly. I moved a bit closer and pulled him to me wrapping my arms around him. I felt one of his arms come around me and he placed his face in my neck.
"You're safe Pietro, I'm right here," I said softly in his ear. Once in a while he did call me mom, Wanda never did. I didn't mind, I knew I could never replace their mother, I just couldn't leave them to fend for themselves when our paths crossed. I don't know how long we sat there, but the sky was starting to lighten. I helped him down to my room and put him in my bed to sleep. He had been having nightmares of the time he nearly died, shot multiple times saving Clint and a kid.
I had used my gift of electricity to bring down the gun and put a shield around him. He had still been severely wounded. As he slept I sat beside him with his head in my lap. I absent-mindedly stroked his hair as he slept. He and his sister had been through so much for ones so young.
