Addiction. A free verse poem.
Whether it is being addicted to someone.
Or addicted to a substance.
Everyone has an addiction.
Even if they don't know it.
That coffee you need in the morning?
That's addiction.
That cigarette you have between your lips?
That's addiction.
Sometimes addictions aren't so innocent..
That case of alcohol you pick up every time your sad?
That's addiction.
Those pills you took to make the party more 'fun'?
That's addiction.
It doesn't matter if you only do it once a month. You are feeding an addiction.
How you don't care when your boyfriend hits you?
That's addiction.
Feeling the warmth flow into your body when you inject that needle..
That's addiction.
That hunger.
The desire.
The burning in your veins.
That's addiction.
Soon, that feeling, the one that makes you feel untouchable?
Will be your greatest weakness.
You will need a fix.
Do anything for a fix.
The sweat pouring off of you.
The trembling.
The mood swings..
Addiction.
You protect that addiction.
No one can speak ill of it.. You must defend it.
You would do whatever it takes to get another hit.
No matter what the cost is.
You lash out. Most of the time, physically.
You don't care that you just beat you girlfriend until your knuckles bled.
You don't care you then grabbed a gun and pressed the trigger.
You only cared when it wasn't loaded.
Addiction eats away at you.
Addiction takes everything away from you.
Addiction possesses you.
Addiction will kill you.
