She took the steps slowly one by one as she made her way back down the living room. Plates, cups, crumpled up notebook paper and empty pizza boxes filled the once clean ping pong table. The speaker continued to play the playlist she had made for the occasion.

She slowly sat down against the cool tiles and leaned her head against the wall. She was blank. She was drained. The few other people who were here were already half way home by now, except for him. He lived a half hour away. These people never tired her, except for him. It seemed every time he was here, she felt like a part of her left.

The speaker paused for a moment as the next song came on. The song seemed to speak to her. It seemed to know exactly the situation. She leaned her head on her knees and let the song fill her head. A few tears slipped from her eyes as it all clicked. Two years ago things would have been different, but it wasn't two years ago anymore. It was a new time with this new group of friends that they both happened to be in with finals right around the corner and too much on her mind.

She began to hear the rain tap against the small window. She slowly lifted her head and watched the rain fall. It somehow felt surreal. Like this wasn't her life. Like somehow she was trapped in a movie, and she was going to wake up. It would all go back to normal, but no matter how many times she blinked, she was still sitting on the floor and crying to what was once her favorite song.

"We're not who we used to be" echoed across the room as it all hit her at once. Every laugh, tear and smile flooded into her head. Her heart beat with the slow tap of the rain. The feeling of tonight filled her, and it all made sense. They weren't the same two people that fell in love those two years ago. They were just two ghosts standing where the two of them once were and where the two of them will never be.
