54. Goodbye

Eldrid...

Who was I again?

Everything hurt – so much...

Eldrid...

I sucked in a deep breath and my eyes flew open.

Gasping slightly as the memories flooded back into my head, I looked around the room in alarm.

The first thing I noticed was that I was sat on a bed in a very familiar-looking sterile white room – it was the very room that I had first been in on the original Helicarrier. The only difference was that the mirror here wasn’t smashed, unlike the one I had left. A sense of vague déjà vu swept over me, particularly when I noticed the second thing.

My left hand was handcuffed to the side of the bed.

I frowned dizzily, and pulled against the metal, before giving up after a second.

I was in slight pain and felt tired, but no longer on the brink of death.

Tony must have found a hospital then.

“Sleeping Beauty awakens. Finally.”

I glanced over at a sarcastic Nick, who was lounging on the white chair in the corner.

“How long have I been unconscious?” I murmured, holding a clammy hand to my forehead.

“A week.”

That didn’t surprise me. Glancing down, I sighed in relief as I felt smooth skin under my red armour.

“Where’s Tony?”

“Oh, he’s here. I’m sure he’s already on his way down – I wouldn’t be surprised if he’s hijacked all the cameras on the Helicarrier. It takes about three agents just to tear him away from your side at night,” Nick said dryly, and I blushed.

“I assume Tony found a hospital then?” I replied hastily, and Nick smiled slightly.

“Yeah. You’re lucky – when we found you and Stark, you were both in a little village hospital on the edge of Ireland. If we hadn’t brought you back to base ... well, I think we both know what would have happened.”

I swallowed, and looked at the floor.

“Then I owe you and Tony a debt,” I said seriously.

“Yes, you do. You know, technically you died – twice. But Stark has some pretty useful technology when he wants to share it – he brought you back to life both times.”

“Really? Then I owe him even more,” I said quietly, my eyes almost tearing up as I realised how close I had been to dying – permanently.

“Where are the others?” I asked suddenly, remembering.

“They’re here. It didn’t take us long to map their location after Tony gave us more details about Atlantis’ whereabouts.”

“Oh. Good. Who’s in charge of Atlantis now?”

“The King is back in charge – though you wiped out most of his subjects. He wasn’t too thrilled.”

“At least he’s alive,” I sighed.

Nick suddenly looked grave, and he leaned forward slightly in his chair and gazed at me unblinkingly.

“There’s something I need to tell you, Eldrid-” Nick was cut off suddenly as the door swung open, and a concerned and weary looking Tony walked into the room.
