Chapter Fifty Two - The Quidditch Tryouts

McGonagall heard about my detention and went to Umbridge at once. Explaining how she knew something would happen and the outbursts were from the mental exhaust and dread from being back so soon after the death of a friend. McGonagall explained away why Mikey and I fought the teacher. Why we wouldn't stop. Why we were on the verge of tears the entire conversation. Umbridge decided she would go back on the detentions if Mikey and I wrote hand written apologies to her.  I didn't fight mine. I had the risk of losing my captains spot and quidditch tryouts the day she wanted to do detention so I just complied. It was easier that way. Mikey however refused to apologize at all. Saying that Umbridge was terrible and he refused to give an apology he didn't mean. So he was still given the detention and he quit the extra defense lessons he was getting last year.

"But doesn't that put you at risk to lose your head boy spot?" Angie asks carefully, "you should just apologize!"

"No," Mikey says, "and they can take the position away and give it to some kiss ass who doesn't see whats happening here."

Our friends look at us tensely. Knowing if anyone in the group would escalate the situation it was us. Angie feeling particularly guilty she started the conversation.

"The ministry has no place in our schools," Mikey says harshly, "Fudge is a bumbling idiot who can barely tell his left from his right and he's swayed by anyone who even half believes he should be in the position. Besides anyone who awards themselves and Order Of Merlin deserves to be laughed out of their position. Anyways I can't believe you wrote the apology Bellerum. You hate bowing down like that."

"Mikey I will lose my spot as captain and we had to fight to get the pitch as it is for tryouts so we can't move them," I say trying to defend my decision, "trust me I didn't want to give in but honestly the more I keep my head down here the faster we get out of here."

"A written apology isn't the worst you've been asked to do," Lee points out, "when Snape gave you the detention during like two weeks of practices 2nd year he asked you for a 20 page essay on why you were wrong."

"Oh god I forgot about that," I groan.

"And you didn't do it that time," George points out.

"Please don't make me feel bad about caving," I say looking over to George, "I didn't really have a choice."

"You did tho," George says, "you could of said no like Mikey. You backing down even during the fight showed her that she has control over you."

"Because she does!" I exclaim, "she's a professor. She's the one in charge of us."

"Never stopped us before," Mikey says harshly. I look over to my boyfriend for sympathy. Only to see none there.

"Fred tell them that I made the only choice I had," I tell him. He shrugs.

"I'm sorry babe it's just.... you fought so hard in the classroom and backing down just shows her she can walk all over us," Fred says.

"I have to disagree," Katie says finally, "I mean sure her backing down might look a little bad. But it just shows that we know when it's better to be quiet. If we start out with Umbridge hating us then we will never make it through her class let alone this year. Plus with you know who back it's better to keep our heads down and fight only when it' necessary... I mean fuck we aren't going to run into Malfoy manor right now to attack Lucius... it's not necessary right now. It makes us look bad. Just like us fighting with a professor makes us look bad."

"Katie that's actually really smart," Alicia says.

"I might seem like an air head... but I've been thinking about this a lot," She says, "the best chance we have is to keep quiet. That's what the order is doing."
