Lowest and Highest Scores

There were school administrators who were not comfortable seeing the high grades of students. At the same time, they did not want a lot of students to fail.

This was why they used the academic freedom bestowed on them to create a policy mandating that the lowest grade we could give was 70 and the highest grade as 98. This created problems for us.

As for the lowest grade, it gives a chance for students to pass easily. In one semester, we had two quarters. A student who will get 70 in one quarter should only get 80 in another quarter. The average of those grades is 75, the minimum passing grade. It was prone to abuse.

As for the highest grade, math teachers had a problem. There were still exceptional students who obtain perfect scores in whatever mathematical problem that would be given to them. They could not mess with the numbers. No student would accept a perfect score of 98. When asked why their grades are 98 and not 100, we only replied: "Because school policy says so."

The university was allowed to do this under its right of academic freedom. It was a weird policy.
