No news on your father, we're still looking. Paula said she can't remember anything, and that what she does remember isn't helpful. She was blindfolded and gagged, mom said.

I sighed.

"You okay, kid?" Beta Ryn nudged me with his large shoulder.

"Yeah, I'm fine," I replied.

Beta Ryn was my forced friend. My first time around him I acted the same as I had around Alpha Ward the first time I met him. But Ryn wasn't one to give up. He pushed and pushed until he got me talking. He was an old man by heart, but just as playful as a young pup.

"You don't seem fine," he said back.

I shrugged. "Just still worried about my dad." I didn't really want to get into it, not again, and Beta Ryn knew that.

"I wonder when Alpha Ward will realize that Bash needs to be Gamma and not Dylan." Ryn changed the subject.

His mate chucked. "Oh, Beta Graham. I wonder when you'll realize that you can change it," she teased.

Jenny had a similar aura about her as Beta Ryn. She was a playful woman, but she too had a bite to back her bark. She was a little less talkative than Beta Ryn, but whenever she spoke her light voice commanded the room.

He rubbed his chin and then shook his head. "You and Luna Danya could do it first," he argued.

I hadn't met Luna Danya but from what I've heard, she wasn't as nice as Alpha Ward. She was the mean one in the relationship. But like all Lunas, she'd die for her pack. She'd lay down her life for every single person here.

"I don't want to be the one to put it on the kid, Jenny," he added. "Not with everything he's been through."

They must have been talking about his sister. "What was she like?" I asked.

"His sister?" Jenny sighed. Her voice was so light and airy that it made wind look heavy. That's probably why she was not only the Pack Beta next to her husband, but also the daycare owner. "Oh she was amazing. She was badass, as cool as could be. It's sad that we lost such a good wolf. Bash tries to follow in her footsteps. She was a lot like you, in a non-weird way."

I raised an eyebrow. "How so?"

"Good fighter, and quick. But she never wanted to be a Warrior. She wanted to be a doctor, to help people. She was amazing," Jenny frowned.

"And Bash bares her death on his shoulders," Ryn added. His wrinkled skin wrinkled even more as his face became sullen. His sister must have been a very great person to have affected the pack like this.

"Because she only left her pack to come visit Sebastián," Ryn continued. "He's such a Warrior. Always wishing he could save everyone."

I closed my eyes and took in a deep breath, smelling a faint scent that was nearly recognizable.

"He needs to be Gamma, he really does. He's just too reckless, too uncaring about his life," Ryn added. "His sister was everything to him and when he lost her..." he shook his head.

I had to contain my tears. To think that he was in a place of complete darkness... it hurt me. Mate or not, there was only so much pain a person should face. Everyone dies at some point, but to blame yourself for the death of a loved one? It was torture. Torture that never ended, no matter how much you begged and pleaded.
