QUINN
I OPENED THE DOOR to the Daycare at exactly 2:00. Sam, who was watching the kids with his friend Zach, sighed in relief.

"Thank God you're here, Quinn." Sam was Alpha Alex's son. Next in line for the throne I guess you could say. "I have no idea where Tamara is hiding. We were playing hide and go seek and then— are you okay?" He stopped his freak out.

I sat on the couch as a little girl, Tamara, ran to me, crawling into my lip. Sam sighed in relief.

I didn't. "Yeah I'm fine, just tired." I replied, smiling as Tamara handed me a fake cellphone.

Sam sat next to me on the couch, worn out and sweaty. Zach got up and left without saying a single word. Usual. He was quiet.

Sam was a year younger than me, turning twenty in a week or so. And yet, he looked a lot younger. He held some of the Japanese qualities of his mom, but he looked more like a blonde haired, blue eyed, version. We all joked that his baby-face would fade into his eighties. "Talk about it. It is wild today. My dad has been nonstop planning and finally it's here and he... he's even more stressed."

Sam and I had always been friends. He was no Matt or Maggie, but he was someone I knew I could trust and vice versa.

"Uh huh." One day I even thought we'd be mates. But... that was a dream quickly forgotten. "I understand why he's stressed."

Sam smiled at Tamara. "I'll stay with you until your shift starts."

I chuckled, looking outside of the daycare. It was cloudy today, it looked like a storm was brewing. "Isn't your dad expecting you to help?"

Sam rolled his eyes. "Definitely but that doesn't mean I am. Speaking of my dad..." Sam pushed me with his shoulder lightly, a grin on his face that told me trouble. "He says that you might find your mate soon."

I shrugged, focusing on the ground a little too hard. "I hope not."

Sam narrowed his eyes at me, surprised. "Why?"

"I don't want to meet some stranger who thinks he owns me." I wrinkled my nose up.

I had a problem. That most werewolves didn't have. I didn't want a mate. Sure, they seemed great and all. But that's just another person to worry about. I couldn't worry about anyone else... not after... not after her.

"You know I don't like new people." I added.

"What if it's not a new person?" He asked in all seriousness.

There wasn't anyone here that it could've been. "Oh yeah? And who else could it be?" As I laughed, looking at Sam's smirking face, I realized. "Sam, no offense. I mean I thought you would be at one point but c'mon..."

Tamara hopped off of my lap and ran off to go play with the other kids, she was definitely bored of this conversation. I couldn't blame her, I was tired of it as well.

He had always been... bold. I'll say bold instead of dumb and crazy. But this was... well it was dumb and crazy. "What why not? We've liked each other before. It only makes sense. We've been friends for forever. Instantly close to each other. My birthday is in a bit, and you started getting symptoms of your mate coming. The moon knows what she's doing."

I stood up and shook my head, thinking about leaving. I didn't want to have this conversation. "Remember when I said this? And you told me I was crazy? And that I needed to stop because the "moon" had plans that weren't with me. Well I did stop having those feelings."
