Author's Note:
I'M BAAACK! I told you I was gonna do a triple update. Here's the second part.
It's short cuz my iPod's about to die.
Unfortunately, on second thought, my iPod battery is almost dead, and the home button isn't working, so I'm gonna had to stop here. I'll post the birthday special tomorrow. (Or Sunday. :P) I'm so sorry.... ;_;
(Later: I redid it a little bit. :P Sorry! Though it's still short.)

CHAPTER THIRTY-ONE: {Flashback}
The wait was completely and utterly unbearable.
It was as if there was a cracked glass bottle in the room. Kay was the one holding it, and occasionally she'd move, and the broken glass would cut her. Occasionally, if she sat still enough, she'd be all right.
She was acting seemingly bipolar, acting fine one moment and sobbing the next. Mello and Matt were finding it nearly impossible to console her, while Near just sat there, trying to interest her in playing.
None of them knew what was going on between L and Kay's father. Beyond and A had left them after getting impatient, and had gone to see what was happening. They had yet to return.
Eventually, something must have changed in the situation, for the doorknob twisted, and someone opened the door.
"You are one lucky girl," Beyond said wearily as he entered Kay's room, sighing loudly.
"Yeah," A inputted, following his roommate in. "You're so lucky that L is so good with reasoning."
Kay looked up, still sniffing slightly, her eyes wide and bright and apprehensive. "So...I get to stay?"
Beyond and A nodded, smiling.
Her eyes filled with tears as she saw L come in.
"L!" she screeched, running over to him. "L-san! L-san! Thank you! Thanks so-" Her speech dissolved into unintelligible Japanese as she flung her arms tightly around the older boy, who probably would have fallen over, had he been anyone else.
All the while, Kay's father watched her silently, smiling sadly. He could see now that this was the place for her to be. He'd come back for her another time.
He stepped into the room, clearing his throat. "Kaori."
The young girl froze abruptly. "Y-yes, Daddy?" she whispered anxiously. Had he changed his mind? Was he going to make her leave? Was he going to yell?
"Nine," he said simply. "I'll come back for you when you're nine or ten. Okay? That's three or four more years." He smiled down at his wide-eyed daughter.
She sniffed. "O-okay, Daddy." She buried herself in her arms, beaming despite having previously been sobbing. "I love you! I really do!"
She was there to see him off at the airport.
L had done what he'd promised. He kept her father from making her go home, with arguments that would remain forever unknown to Kay. So from then on, Kay constantly looked up to L even more. He had saved her, after all. It was bound to have made a lasting impression on her.
That August, Kay entered school with Mello, Matt, and Near by her side, with L, Beyond, A, and the other Wammy House residents on standby in case anything happened.
And there began the best three or four years of her life.
