CHAPTER TWENTY-NINE: {Flashback}
"Kay!" Mello called, looking in their shared bedroom. But all he saw in there was her neatly packed suitcase (done by L, and not her, of course). No Kay.
He sighed and hurried out.
"Kay! Kay, where are you?" Matt shouted in the hall. He saw Mello and looked at him hopefully, but the blond shook his small head.
L was out in the front yard, having no luck with finding Kay, and Near had somehow gotten stuck with the vast backyard, even though he was by far the youngest. (Mello may or may not have been supposed to help him, though, and may or may not have been purposely avoiding it.)
And all the while, Kay's father sat in Mr. Wammy's office, politely making small talk with the aging person who ran the Wammy House, Quillish Wammy.
---
For the past few days, ever since the phone call, in fact, Kay had been more quiet and somber, and hadn't been the ray of sunshine she typically was. She had stopped talking to everyone as much, and tended to get lost in what must've been surprisingly serious thoughts for a six-year-old. L, Beyond, and A suspected it had to do with the phone call she'd received, but had no earthly idea what the call had been about. All they knew was that she wasn't acting like her usual self, and that nobody-not them, not Matt or Mello or Near, not Wammy or Roger, not anyone else, for that matter-liked it one bit.
Now Kay's father was here, and she was leaving, and it was no longer necessary to guess what was going on-it was obvious to those who knew her well.
While Matt and Mello were having no success finding Kay in the house, L and A were in the front yard, having the exact same results: none.
And while that was happening, Near was finding a sniffling girl with short brown hair hiding in a bush in the garden.
He stared apathetically at her, then toddled over to a frustrated Beyond and wordlessly tugged the older boy over to the bush.
---
"Oi, L! I found the little brat!" Beyond called, forcefully dragging a protesting Kay into the front yard. The poor girl was still crying slightly, but the red-eyed youth hadn't noticed it, so it seemed.
A, L, and Near went up to Beyond and his struggling captive.
"Kay," A said, confused, "your dad's here. Have you not heard us? Uncle Wammy wanted you, so we were looking for you."
Kay sniffled. "No!"
She tore away from an angry Beyond, and raced into the house, probably to lock herself in her room or her bathroom. She didn't know, though, that there was someone waiting for her right inside the door.
Kay threw open the front door and raced inside, immediately running into something-someone-tall and a bit on the large side. She looked up to see her father.
"Kaori!" he called in Japanese, joyously scooping her up into his arms. "It's so good to see my little girl after so long!" He brought her away from him, so that she was dangling a bit in the air. "So, how's my angel been? You've been good, I trust?"
Kay nodded slowly, fearfully. She squirmed. "Lemme down," she mumbled.
Her father did just that.
"So, you ready to go?" he cheerfully asked his daughter.
Kay slowly edged away from him. "I...," she mumbled softly.
"You'd best say your goodbyes and get your suitcase," he continued, unaware of his daughter's hesitation. "We have a flight to catch tonight after dinner. I was thinking we could eat somewhere nice and talk about how you've been-"
"N...no," Kay whispered, a soft, horrified mantra to herself. "No. No. No, no, no."
"Hm?" Her father paused.
"N...NO!" she screeched to him. "No!"
His expression darkened ever so slightly; he sighed. "Kaori.... I know you want to stay here, but the Japanese education system is much better. You'll be closer to me, and I know you'll like the uniforms. They're cute. Just like you-" He leaned down to pinch her cheek softly, but she backed away.
"No," she said, still surprised at the fact that she was contradicting her father. "I don't...wanna. I don't wanna."
"Kaori Yamazaki...," her father began in a slightly threatening tone. "Get your suitcase. Now, please."
"NO!" Kay shouted once more, turning and running into the backyard.
Her father started after her, but was stopped by L, Beyond, and A.
"We've got this, sir," A said in perfect and formal Japanese, indicating that they'd understood the entire exchange. In response, Beyond nodded and L blinked.
Then they went after their small friend.
---
Kay was hiding in the exact same bush she'd been in before, suggesting that maybe she had actually wanted them to find her. She was sniffing and holding back tears.
The three older children stared at her silently, and then L made a move.
He gently placed a hand on her shoulder. "Kay."
Kay turned slowly, eyes wide and bright with unshed tears. "I...," she mumbled in a small, trembling voice. "I-don't wanna go!"
And with that, the six-year-old dissolved into loud tears.
The three stood there a moment in silence, watching her sob and wail. Then L, and then Beyond and A, bent down to her level.
L rested a hand on her head, gently patting it. And as her sobs slowly died down, he spoke. "Kay."
She looked up, water still leaking out of her eyes and desperately in need of a tissue or two.
"I'll see what we can do," he said simply.
And with that, some unspoken conversation took place between the three older boys. Beyond picked up Kay and headed into the house via the back entrance, and L headed back to the front.
Kay watched his thin, retreating frame with wide eyes as a princess would watch her knight. Only L was far from a knight.
Kay, however, found she didn't care about that fact.
And that was that.
