This Empty Prison

Can't show who I am,

Judging eyes everywhere.

Too short, too tight

They seem to yell

"Tug your cleavage out of sight."

"Don't hang out with the boys,

They'll fill your head with lies."

Men can stay out late

"No young lady, you ain't allowed to date. "

You must know how to cook, clean and care.

"Stepping out of line? Don't you dare!"

Allowed to see

But not express;

Allowed to eat

But not taste;

What is life, if you are to exist,

But not be alive?

So what if I have unattainable dreams?

So what if I don't have the face of an angel?

How do you give it your best,

When the heart is miles away

In an open book

Or a scribbling pen?

My wishes, Not mine;

My dreams, Not mine.

What is mine is this empty prison

Forever to hold

And forever to keep.
