Chapter 19

KATNISS' POV

I watch as Gale passes out nightlock pills, and small navigation pods. Then he begins to go through the strategy

He seems slightly startled when he reads my name

"Soldier Everdeen-" he begins, looking back at Paylor. She raises an eyebrow, but not in suspicion, more like she was asking Gale what was wrong

"Katniss is already on this list?" he asks, Paylor lets a chuckle escape

"Colonel Hawthorne, did you really think we didn't know Katniss would come?" she says with a hint of cunning in her eye

Gale gave a half smile and shook his head

As we round the corner of the cement fortress, we hear footsteps

Gale puts his arm in front of my and pulls me back as our squad blows their soldiers away

It's night now, so they are less heavily guarded

Gale grabs a few of their guns and straps them to his back

We finally reach the massive metal door, that is supposed to lead to the room where they streamed Bare a few days ago

But as Gale and the rest of the squad hooks up explosives, i start to wonder down a hallway

Unsurprisingly, Haymitch runs after me

"We will find them sweetheart, both of them" his smile reassures me for only a few moments, then we stumble upon an opening, with a cell in the middle.

I run over desperate to find Peeta, but he isn't on there

"Haymitch, he's probably dead, Bare too" i say my eyes welling up with tears

"No, they are alive" he says stubbornly. I nod and follow him across the room

As we walk up the hall to join the others, Haymitch stops

"Look" he says, a smile beginning to envelope his face

"What?" he points to the corner of the cement ceiling

"Its"

"A security camera" he says, his smiling turning into a conniving grin

I follow him as he tries to navigate his way through the halls to the security room

After about 20 minutes of running around, I stop him

"Do you want me to lead now?" i ask sarcastically, Haymitch just rolls his eyes and waves me off

"Fine"

I find the security room in 5 minutes. Haymitch keeps saying that I only found it because he brought me all of the way over here, and i let the old drunk believe what he wants

We walk into the control room, hoping to find some sort of camera to confirm Peeta's death

Suddenly we hear a loud roar and look out the window facing the vehicle bunker, a russian aircraft is on the landing strip. Looking down i can see Peeta, struggling to get out of two guards' grasp

I don't even take a second to think before i race down the corridor. I find a ladder, leading down to the aircraft bunker as soon as my feet touch the gravel, i run calling his name the whole time

It doesn't even feel like my feet are touching the ground as i go. I almost feel free as i run. I haven't been able to feel like this since we were back in 12

I would bring Bare into the meadow and show him through the woods. The grass felt so soft on our feet as we caught frogs and picked wild cotton that grew near our favorite marsh

Im almost to the aircraft when it starts to lift in the air

"No!" i scream, it's so loud that it echoes throughout the bunker

It's just loud enough that it catches Peeta's attention. He turns to me and his eyes widen

The motor is loud and muffles his voice. A guard rushes over to Peeta, sees me, and pounds his fist on the side of the opening, the back of the aircraft begins to close

Peeta flails around back and forth until the gauge on his mouth falls around his neck

He stares me in the face, horror consuming him. He spots the gun in my hand and looks at me longingly, i know what he wants

He breathes deep, his eyes wild and scared

"KATNI-"

The opening seals completely and the craft is gone in a matter of seconds.
