KATNISS' POV
I bite my lip, trying to keep the tears for bursting out, instead they trickle as my mom delivers might be the worst news of my life
"SUDEP accrued while he was having a seizure, it's very rare"
"What caused it?" I ask
"There are many triggers, some could be, stress or sleep deprivation or even cerebral defect you were unaware of" I begin to shake
All the symptoms could have been caused by me; stress - that's all I've had for the last few days and I can only imagine how it impacted him. Sleep deprivation - I can't console him at night while I myself needed consolation. Even cerebral defects, why didn't we get him checked on for those things?!
I can't speak, I try desperately but no words escape my lips, my throat is hoarse and my legs refuse to move
"Mom..." is all I can manage to say, she looks at me with fear in her eyes, I've seen those eyes so many times, always blank, emotionless, the fear has got to be real, truly real, for it to show through like this
Haymitch grabs my arms just seconds before I black out. I guess I stopped breathing when she told me

I wake up, my head is pounding, I hear people arguing outside my door.
"Let me see her" Gale says, I can hear the fire in his voice
"She said she doesn't want you to be here" my mom says, she talks to Gale with an authoritative tone. Gale may be larger than her, but she's known him since he was a child, and she has no problem putting him in his place
"Gale, if she asks for you to come, we won't hesitate to get you, but she doesn't want you here right now" Haymitch says
"I need it go in"
"Gale, please just let it go" my mom says
"I can't!" Gale explodes
"I promised Peeta that if anything happened to him, I would make sure his family was safe, Katniss is his family! I can't forget about that promise, I won't" the tears begin again, at this rate, I'll have none left to cry when they tell me that Peeta has died
All was silent for a few seconds
Finally I could hear Haymitch swallow hard
"5 minutes"
The cedar door swings open, and he walks in, closing it behind him before anyone could follow
"Hey Katnip" he said, touching my cheek
"Don't cry, you're going to be okay" he says with a smile
"Not if Peeta and Bare don't come back, or if Oakley dies" I say with sniffle
"I won't let that happen" he says
"Why?"
"Because I want you to be happy"
"No, why did you promise Peeta you'd take care of me?"
"Because, I love you"
"No, that's not why"
"Because he told me it would make up for not saving his family"
"Oh"
"I'd better go Katnip" he says with a sad smile, I miss Gale, but I need Peeta, this is the moment. I thought it was on that beach in the Quarter Quell, then I thought maybe the day Bare was born, but this is it, this is truly the moment I realized I need Peeta Mellark
