The two of them had their mindless scrolling interrupted by the thumping of Colby going down the stairs at a fast pace. It was evident that he was newly showered and dressed from the lack of the metal-tainted stink of booze which had been replaced with a smooth sandalwood shampoo. His eyes and face were still slightly red and puffy from the heat of the shower water mixed with residual anger. He clenched his hand around his phone, turning his knuckles white with the pressure, and his neck was stiffly centered above clenched shoulders.

"Bro, where are you going," Corey asked with a feigned cheeriness in an attempt to hide his unease caused by the sudden reappearance of the other boy. He had sat up at the sudden sound a second before and stayed hovering stiffly in anticipation of what would happen. Sam was trying to be as small as possible from his place on the couch by curling up behind his phone screen. Even though he was staring intently at the bright light on the screen he didn't know what he was looking at, being more concerned with what was happening a few feet away.

Colby glanced at the sight of his friend trying to camouflage into the background and felt a sting of disappointment. It pissed him off that Sam couldn't even look at him. He just wanted the other to admit what had happened or at least pretend it hadn't happen at all. But Sam was just avoiding every movement and glance Colby gave him and it hurt. Instead of letting himself grow angrier Colby held up his broken phone as a way to show what he was doing. Corey raised his eyebrows and cussed under his breath at the sight of the shattered screen which caused Sam to glance over for a millisecond, making sure not to look into Colby's eyes. In a monotone voice, the brunette said, "I'm going out."

With that, he turned on his heel and walked towards the door. He was so angry at himself and Sam but he desperately wanted the other to call him back. Tell me to stop! Say my name and tell me to stay! He begged silently without turning his back again. It was pathetic and he knew it, walking out and expecting to be called back like in a movie. With a tiny second of hesitation he slammed the door behind him and walked out to his car.

Sam's head fell into his hands in frustration. He was so confused on what he should do. He wanted to run after Colby and stop him before he drove away. He wanted to catch the boys  hands in his own and pull him into a kiss to make up for the night before. He wanted to remember every second of it how it was and not how the booze made him perceive it. God he was so screwed. Corey got up from his place on the opposite side of the room and walked over. On his way out of the room he patted Sam's shoulder in a semi-comforting movement.

Sam just nodded. He hated the silence. He hated that he could hear every thought when it was quiet. He wasn't usually the kind of person to linger in his mind so when he did it was that much harder to get out of the trap. Usually he surrounded himself with people at all times or at least he hung out with Colby. The two of them would just sit in their rooms together and relax. Sam didn't hate silence, he just hated the silence that wasn't theirs.

Irritated, he went upstairs and crawled into his bed. The coffee he had taken earlier in the day to rid him of his hangover had worn off by that point so he was calmed down by the pressure of his duvet resting upon his skin. Exhausted, he closed his eyes tightly and tried to will himself to stop thinking so much. It must have worked because he was asleep in under half an hour, tucked in delicately between the fabric of his blankets.

A few hours later he awoke to the buzz of his phone going off multiple times. Groaning, he checked the notification and squinted at the sudden change of light. There were three missed calls from Colby and a few text notifications. He cursed when he realized that he had slept through the vibrations of so many calls. It was unusual for him because he wasn't a particularly heavy sleeper but it was just a testament to how tiring partying was to his body. Quickly unlocking his phone he redialed the number that he had missed and waited for Colby to pick up. Much to his surprise, the line went dead after only two rings, signalling that the other boy had declined his return call. Confused, he tried another time just to be turned down even quicker than the last time. He groaned at how stupidly stubborn his friend could be and went into their texts. He read the ones that he had missed when he was asleep to see if he could figure out what was going on.

Colby: Sam, can we talk? (2:38)

Colby: Or you cold ignore me, it's really fucking mature. (2:57)

Colby: You know what, never mind. I don't care. (2:59)

Sam: Sorry, I was asleep. (3:34)

Sam: Is everything okay? I wasn't ignoring you (3:35)

(seen)

Sam rolled his eyes at how Colby was acting. He got that the other was angry but if he wanted to talk there was no point in ignoring the one who he wished to converse with. He was somewhat used to his friend's juvenile tactics when it came to having a disagreements but it didn't help him solve what issues he was having now. He wanted to talk to Colby, the need to explain what had happened and what he meant by it was ripping Sam apart but he couldn't get the other to reply to any of his messages. Sam knew that he would get no where simply trying to text Colby so he put down his phone and clambered out of bed.

He made his way down to the kitchen to find it empty aside from Devyn's purse and a couple of stray items that had found their way in. Groaning, Sam made his way to the fridge and pulled out a juice carton before pouring himself a glass and plopping down on a stool. He put his chin flush on the counter top and watched the tiny pieces of pulp float around his orange juice. Almost all of them had settled at the bottom when he was startled by the sound of someone pulling into the driveway. Realizing that he hadn't had any of his juice, Sam quickly chugged it and turned to look at who was unlocking the door, hoping and praying that it would be the one person he wanted it to be.
