Tara

It was late in the evening and David had brought in the dinner. Schoving down some bread I looked over at Nate.

Poor guy was just in a place where he shouldn't be. He got mixed up in my business for no particular reason.

Had he thought he would get kidnapped while on vacation in Denver? How stupid of me. Who thinks like that?

May be he felt me staring at him, because he suddenly looks up and smiles a small smile.

I smile back sadly and spell out sorry without sound. He just shrugs.

In another life, when I had a different job and other circumstances, we could have been friends. He was a good man.

However we broke eye contact as soon as David walked in. We didn't want to show him any emotion or personal connection.

"You are in luck. Uncle wants to hear your proposition and he will consider if it is worth setting you free. "

David says, all the while looking between me and Nate, trying to look for some weakness or fear. I show nothing and Nate has a furrowed brow, looking confused.

"Good. Can I ask you something?"

I ask David.

He just looks at me. I go ahead not caring.

"Can I have a shower? It's been two days and I am still in bloodied clothes."

I see both men staring at me as if I'm mad.

"Let me get this straight. You were kidnapped and threatened and all you care about is showering?"

David asks slowly.

"Well I don't know about your sense of hygiene but I like my body clean. "

Despite himself, David gives a wolfish grin however Nate seems like he is about to pass out.

"I'll get you some clothes." He says still smiling and walks out of the room.

Yipppeee

Finally a shower. I looked over at Nate to ask him why he didn't ask for showering too but stopped myself instantly.

Nathan Anderson was looking at me with anger and I couldn't figure out why.

"Did you just flirt with your kidnapper?" He saysin a deathly whisper.

"I ... what?" Was he delusional or aomething?

"I just asked for a shower. What's the problem with that?"

"Don't forget he is more dangerous than he looks. Selling yourself cheap wouldn't make him spare you."

HE DID NOT JUST SAY THAT.

I couldn't believe he just insulted me and here I was delusional that he was a good man.

I didn't even want to talk to him anymore, let alone argue. So I just say,

"Fuck you." And look away.

Shit! I hated crying and I hated more when a man made me cry.

Nate

Nate didn't know why he was so angry at her. Why did she had to flirt with that douche.

Didn't she understand what affects she had on men? Even when she was living with him in the cabin, he had difficulty keeping her thoughts at bay. It was difficult living with her, knowing she was only an assignment.

Now she had no fear while talking to the kidnapper. She didn't know how much danger she was in and she just casually spoke to her kidnapper, discussing about clean bodies.

What the fuck? No matter he had that vile grin on.

And on top of that he had taken out his anger on Tara. How poorly she must think of him.

He didn't say sorry but he felt it really bad. As soon as the words were out of his mouth, he regretted it. Now seeing her cry, he felt like an asshole and he couldn't do anything about it.

David

Half an hour later David walked in with some clothes for the girl. He had quite fun choosing her underwear on Amazon prime.

The girl was more brave than any hostages he had had before. But then again she was the first girl here. They had their priorities. You wouldn't see a man asking for a shower to his kidnapper.

Walking in he saw the girl in tears. He didn't know what had happened, for her to be crying. But David felt weird seeing her cry.

It had been long since the last time he had felt bad for a person. But he felt bad for Tara. She seemed such a young girl to be entangled in such a mess. Girls like her should be living under the protection of someone who cared for them.

And here she was making deals with uncle Dom. Her boyfriend was also quite useless. They didn't even seem to talk much. He should atleast console her.

Forgetting myself, my training, I ask her,

"Are you alright?" Looking at me, she blinks.

"Yes." She says slowly, waiting for me to say something mean.

Recovering I say,

"Here are some clothes. I hope they fit." I say.

She takes them slowly and I untie her.
Standing up she trips twice, being tied up must have led to cramps.

Before she could fall again, I took her hand and walked her to the bathroom. Turning the water on for filling the tub, I make her sit on a stool.

"Sit. You must have cramps. Wait for 5 minutes and it'll pass. I am locking the door. Just press the button on the knob's center and it'll unlock. And yeah, the cupboard under the sink has fresh towels. "

All the while she just looked at me, her mouth a little ajar.

"What?" I ask. Why was she looking at me like that.

"Umm. Why are you being nice to me?" She asks.

Was this being nice? This girl was high. I was taking her to Dom Suarez tomorrow and she thought I was being nice.

I said nothing.

But just before I was closing the door behind me, I heard a faint voice, her voice.

"Thank you David. "

Thank you. The words were strange to him. It was a novelty. Never in his life had a person thanked him. The sincerity with which she had thanked him was so alien to him.

He didn't deserve that. He was just a monster, entertaining his prey. His life was a stranger to emotions like gratitude or sincerity.

For the first time in his life, he felt remorse and it fucking tore him.
