helpless waltz

helpless.

dan was helpless.

as the few days had passed, he'd feel the sickness growing in his stomach.

it started with the blossom tree.

phil was dressed up as usual. mint green sweater pulled over a black button up. complimented nicely by his ocean blue eyes, baby blue flower crown, and matching torn denim shorts. his jewellery was all gemstones.

he tended to use gemstones to indicate his mood. they had different properties and brought different things.

today he'd selected emeralds. he claimed they brought good luck and good health. which was what their baby tree would need.

phil swung his legs back and forth from the low tree branch he sat upon. he brought a bubble wand to his mouth, forming a small flurry of watery bubbles. dan had his hands closed tightly around the wooden handle of a shovel.

a small ditch was being dug singlehandedly by dan who was currently scowling at his neighbour.

"aren't you going to help?"
"i will. i'm just observing nature."
"what have you observed?"
"the clouds are greying. a storm."
"soon?"
"maybe. in less than an hour."

dan swiped his has across his forehead, clearing it of the small beads of sweat only beginning to appear. phil hopped off his perch on the tree, grasping a small peach pot with a tiny green plant poking out of the dark soil.

he transferred the sapling from the pot to the ditch, gently patting at the surrounding earth to support the foundation.

dan knelt down, admiring the small sprout that would soon be a full flowering blossom tree. phil reached out for dan's hand, clutched his wrist and softly pushed his outstretched hand into the dirt. phil mimicked the movement and finally stood up.

"there. now people can know it's ours." "people don't come here."
"then the astronauts will know."
"i don't think their vision is that good." "lighten up, dan!"

dan opened his mouth to protest but was immediately shushed by an airborne finger being pushed up to his lips.

"the storm is coming."

as if a jinx, a small raindrop bounced off dan's cheek and landed on the plant.

then another droplet.

then another.

after a minute the drizzling shower turned into a heavy downpour. dan glanced at phil who began to strip off his drenched mint sweater.

the black button up was clinging to his skin for dear life, accentuating the curves in his arms. dan felt his stomach go utterly hollow as phil held out his hand like a life line.

the water had landed in multiple strands of his hair, threaded like tiny jewels. phil's face was brighter than ever as he warmly beamed.

"may i have this dance?"

dan accepted the hand. phil roughly yanked dan's arm, slamming their bodies together and linking their hands.

phil wrapped his arms around dan's soaked neck as dan's hands found their way to phil's thin hips. their feet glided across the uneven soil, trying their best to manoeuvre around the murky puddles.

there was no music but they didn't need it. dan felt phil's pounding heart press up against his chest. he hugged him closer as he dipped him playfully.

their faces were only inches away. dan could detect the faint smell of bubblegum and cherries on phil's lips. phil slowly let his mouth curl into a smirk.

"i never knew you were so fond of me, kitty boy."

dan felt a light blush tickle his cheeks. he immediately pulled phil back up right and looked away.

phil leaned into dan's ear, dropping his voice to a melodic whisper.

'when i look into your eyes,
it's like watching the night sky.'

dan bowed his head into the crook of phil's neck. he continued the lyrics into a duet.

'or a beautiful sunrise.
well, there's so much they hold.'

'and just like them old stars,
i see that you've come so far,
to be right where you are.
how old is your soul?'

'well i won't give up on us,
even if the sky gets rough.
i'm giving you all my love,
i'm still looking up.'

the two boys continued like this for almost an hour, right through the storm.

dan was helpless.

helplessly in love.
