Knight In Shining Armor

It's funny how accurate the saying goes.

"When it rains, it pours."

Pag minalas ka nga naman, sunod sunod na at bubuhos pa talaga. Wala pang "time pers."

Walang "wait lang."

Pagbalik ko sa Aklan ay nalaman ko nalang na AWOL na pala ako. They decided I was no good and that the company would prosper even without me.

Fine.

Never kong ipagsisiksikan ang sarili ko sa mga ayaw sakin. And I proved that for so many times already.

Kay Ringo.

Kay Henry.

And even with this job.

I'll get over this in no time, I kept reminding myself as I ate alone at a pizza parlor.

As I thought of the next move to take, my phone vibrated inside my pocket.

Pagkakuha ko nito ay nakita kong si Denzel ang tumatawag.

We exchanged numbers through Facebook and we kept in touch with each other. I can't deny that she's such a good friend.

"Paiiiiige!" She seemed thrilled. Bungad pa lang, parang tumatalon na siya.

"Ano 'yun?" Tanong ko.

"Kumusta ka na? I have good news!"

"Ayos lang ako." Sagot ko. "Nanalo ka ba sa lotto?"

"Hindi, gaga! I heard from Jenna na na-AWOL ka daw sa work mo dyan?"

"At bakit parang masaya ka pa?" Nagtaas ako ng kilay. Pambihira talaga itong si Denzel. "Saka nabalitaan mo agad? Kanina ko lang nakwento kay Jenna yan ah."

"Syempre! Ako pa ba? Listen! I have a better job offer!"

Uh-huh?

"Which is?" I queried.

"Assistant Manager sa Superb Shopping Centre! Si Treble kasi, kaibigan niya yung Manager. Nagpapahanap ng great addition to the team kaya naisip ko na irecommend ka."

"What makes you think na fit ako dyan?" Tanong ko.

"Basta't alam ko na fit ka. Sige na, Paige. Para hindi ka mag-isa sa malayong lugar na ganyan. Dito kasama mo ako at si Jenna. Kahit paano, hindi ka mangangapa."

"Denz, just to remind you, umalis ako diyan para hindi ko na makita si Henry." Sabi ko. "Tapos babalik na naman ako diyan to give us more chances to cross paths again? Wag na!"

"Ito naman," she sounded like she was pouting. "Why would you care about Henry? We are talking about a good opportunity here. Saka hindi pa ako tapos mag explain. If you perform well during your first three months, you could be promoted as Branch Manager when the new branch opens in Tarlac.  Malapit na yun sa inyo sa Buenos Grande, right?"

"Oo." Tipid kong sagot.

"The opening of Superb Tarlac is set three months from now. Sa set-up palang idedeploy kana doon. Kaya sana as much as possible, mag apply kana dito para makapagpakitang gilas kana."

"I really appreciate your offer. Alam mo yan. Pero pag-iisipan ko muna, okay? I don't know if Retail Industry suits me well."

"There's no better way to find out than to try, right?" Ani Denzel.
