chasing knots [1] ; lee felix

Start from the beginning

"Wow," Felix takes the book and lets his finger run over the spine of the book, "I didn't know she writes."

"That's because she never told you."

Felix glared at his friend, who gave him a cheeky grin in return. Chan patted his shoulder and stood up, "I'll be off now. Changbin and Jisung are both handfuls and made me come back home with lots of work," he complains. "Anyways, that's kind of a weird book, and everything you read there will be snippets of (Y/N), her attitude, her past, her everything. And it'll get weirder the more you get into the book, so don't be so surprise if something weird happens."

"Huh?" Felix looked clueless. "What do you mean?"

Chan brushed his question off and nodded towards the book, "Just read it. And I recommend that you read it in your room. Less distraction, more focus."

To say Felix was already weirded out was an understatement. Chan was obviously trying to say something and is subtly hinting on whatever it was. The problem is, Felix can be a really dense person and not notice things (even if what he was trying to look for is right in front of him but we don't talk about that), so he was making all the little wheels in his head work the right way, and possibly figure out whatever Chan is talking about.

"What kind of book is this, anyway?" Felix asks himself and looks at the cover of the book; it had a brown leather cover and had gold writings on it, as if it was a really old journal and not a book being sold in the market. "This looks like a diary," he says and opens the first page, and he could slowly make out the words 'Something I Can't Have'.

"Interesting," he mumbles and walks into the guest room, only to hurry back to the living room to retrieve his snacks before going back inside his room.

There, Felix sat on the floor near the bedside table, pulled the snacks beside him, and began to read the book.

For my brother, Chan

Thank you for being my rock, for being someone who I love.

Felix smiled at the dedication (Y/N) made for her brother, and is about to flip the next page to start reading when he remembered his phone. Although he knows the basic words, he was still rusty in his Korean. He opened his phone and went to Google translate, holding it tightly in his hand and readying himself for whatever he needs to understand.

The tobacco plantation holds a lot of dangers, especially for young women like me.

But in my perspective, it was different.

It was a place where I can escape the horrors of the land I live in, the land I used to play in freely, the land where I grew up, and the same land where the Spaniards came and oppressed every single citizen, men, women and children.

Before Felix even came across the fourth paragraph of the first chapter, his head started to spin, his vision became dotted with irregular circles, he felt nauseous, and the last thing he saw was the pack of chips beside him before he fell forward into a deep, deep sleep.

"Ginoo, naririnig mo ba ako?"

"Mister, can you hear me?"

"Ginoo?"

"Mister?"

Felix cracked his eyes open and reached up to scratch his head, feeling something hard underneath his body. Like, he is lying down on the ground, with rocks poking his back. His face felt hot, as if the sun is beating down directly on his face—

Wait.

The male opened his eyes completely, and his vision settled on the silhouette towering over him. It was a figure of a lady, with her hair neatly tied back in a tight bun, and she was wearing something like a dress. Felix turned his head to the side and saw her whole outfit—it was kind of weird, in his opinion—a white top that slightly exposed her shoulders and a blood red skirt that somewhat reached the ankles, a pair of brown dolly shoes and pearl accessories; it was all new to him.

"Who are you?" he asks, using his arms to pull himself up. However, instead of getting an answer right away, the girl looked at him as if she had not understood what he said.

Two figures passed by them, oblivious to the situation. Felix ignored them and focused his vision on the girl, who looked a lot like (Y/N).

"Ano pong sabi ninyo?"

"What did you say?"

"Who are you?" he asked again, dusting himself off and looking down on his clothes, realizing that his outfit changed into a white long sleeved shirt, faded black pants and a red cloth folded in a triangle tied around his neck loosely. He recognized this outfit, from some book he had read.

"Hindi ko po kayo maintindihan," said the girl and bowed her head apologetically, "pasensya na po."

"I can't understand you, I'm sorry."

Felix laughed dryly, sensing that his situation would lead him nowhere, and this girl that he's been talking to seem to not understand a single thing he's saying. Just then, he looked down at his hand, and saw his phone, fully charged. A bright idea popped into his head and looked at his data usage, smiling to himself.

"I could use Google translate," Felix mumbles and turns on his mobile data, but to his dismay, there was no signal. "The hell?"

"Ginoo?" the girl's voice broke his thoughts again, and this time, she shyly laid a hand on his knee. "Maayos ba po ang pakiramdam niyo? Bigla na lang po kasi kayong nahulog kanina. Nawalan po kayo ng malay."

"Mister? Are you feeling alright? You suddenly fell earlier. You lost consciousness."

Felix then remembered that he can speak little of the language. So, with a shaky voice, he uttered broken words.

"Uh...nasa...Pee-lee-pee-nas...ta-tayo, right?" he says with a cringe.

"Uh...we're in the Philippines, right?"

The female bit back a laugh as she nodded, understanding his situation. "Oo, nasa Pilipinas tayo. Taong 1896."

"Yes, we're in the Philippines. Year 1896."

Felix laughed dryly once more, running a hand through his hair as he sat up on the rocky ground.

"The fuck?"
