The golden balloons fly towards the ceiling, signifying the end of my high school career. Oh God. Why did I decide to come to prom? It's not like I wanted to! I repeat the mantra in my head. "You're doing this for mum. You're doing this for mum. You're doing this for mum. " The words soothe the panic attack I can feel rising like bile in my throat. I breathe deeply in through my nose and out through my mouth.
Ever since my mother had been diagnosed with stage 4 cancer, she had wanted me and my twin brother to carry on normally. Which meant prom. Poofy dresses and high heel clad girls, with make-up caked all over their faces and hormonal teenage boys with tuxedos and the hopes of getting laid. The nerds stood ,grouped together in the corners, actually looking nice and talking about science. And then the populars; seated in their expensive clothes and the posh limousines waiting outside for the after party, filled with champagne.
