Sophie pushed open Havenfield's door and led Fitz inside. "Mom! Dad! Fitz and I are going to do some cognate training, and we're going to need some peace and quiet!" She called.

Edaline poked her head out of the kitchen. "That's great, dear. We won't disturb you."

Giving her thanks to Edaline, she headed up the stairs. As soon as they got to her room, Fitz Sat on the floor, ready for their cognate training to begin. Sophie, however, was hesitant to join him. She turned around to head out of the door, looking for a good excuse to put off the training for as long as possible. "I'm... going to go get us some Mallowmelt," she announced carefully.

Fitz sighed. "Sophie, quit stalling. You know that you're going to have to tell me eventually, so why don't you just get it done and over with?" he suggested.

"Because it could change everything," she explained, reluctantly sitting across from him, but refusing to look him in the eye. She continued, the worry evident in her voice, "It could ruin our friendship, and our ability to be cognates. And I'm not ready to risk that."

Fitz leaned forward and grabbed Sophie's hands, their cognate rings snapping together, and waited until she met his gaze. "Listen, Sophie. Nothing is going to ruin our friendship. No matter what you tell me, I'm going to stick with you all the way. Look at how much we've already been through together! Did I leave you when things got tough? No! I almost died, but I still want to help you. There is nothing you can say that will get me to not want to be your friend anymore. In fact, telling me will probably help me trust you more than I already do. Okay?" he assured her.

Looking away, she nodded. "Okay," she reluctantly agreed in a small voice. Sophie was sure she was tomato red at that point. That was one of the sweetest things Fitz had ever said to her, and she was sure he meant every word of it. But then again, he didn't know what her secret was. She looked back at him, trying to push her doubt aside. "We're doing this telepathically, right?" She checked.

Fitz nodded in affirmation. "You have permission to enter my mind."

Okay. I can do this. I can tell you my secret. It will be okay. I can.... Sophie transmitted, reassuring herself, but was interrupted by Fitz's thoughts.

We're going to do this like the first time, except for the part where Keefe cut you off before you could tell me. On the count of three, Ready? One...

Sophie's palms started to sweat, and her stomach did a flip. What had she gotten herself into?

Two...

She couldn't tell Fitz her feelings! Things would never be the same between them. But... she had to. She took a deep breath. Here came the moment that would ruin everything...

Three!

Okay, I like you. That's my secret. I've had a crush on you pretty much since the moment we met. She blurted, trying not to think about how Fitz would react.

"Oh good," he said under his breath, so quiet that Sophie almost didn't hear him, especially since she was concentrating on his thoughts. It took a minute of rambling for her to realize he had said anything at all.

I saw you with your teal eyes and dark hair, and thought you were the hottest guy I've ever seen. I still think that, by the way. And then you showed me the Elven world, and brought me home to where I belong. And then, well, I got to know you better, and I guess I just kind of fell in love. Sorry. This is stupid. I shouldn't have told you. I knew you could never like me back. UGH! Why does this have to be so awkward! And... and... Embarrassing! I don't know what I was thinking. I just... Wait, what did you say?!

I said, "Oh good." He replied, grinning at her.

Wait, what!? WHY!? She spluttered.

You were right about one thing, Sophie. I don't like you....

Looking away, she sighed, tears springing to her eyes. I know. That's why I didn't want to tell you.

Fitz pulled her hands towards him and leaned closer, looking her in the eye. ....I love you.

And with that, he did something Sophie never would have expected; Fitz leaned forward, and placed his lips gently onto hers.

So, I hope you liked chapter two! I'm sorry the chapters are so short. It takes a lot longer to write than it does to read.
