Peter crushes the tick with all his might, thinking that killing it might release its grip on him. Doing so just squeezes infected juices from the tick's body into his knee cap. The area becomes very infected, and Peter grows weaker and weaker. Due to a lack of medical care, he loses the use of that leg, crippling himself in the wild. So, eventually, because he cannot adequately care for himself, he dies of starvation.
