Homework.

Why does such a thing even exist? Don't we do enough work in class without having to bring it home? I guess not.

I have just finished my math when I hear my phone ding. I close my textbook and sit it on my nightstand, pulling my phone out of my pocket. A smile immediately takes over my face as I see who texted me.

GUESS WHAT?! -Tobias

WELL HELLO TO YOU TOO! 🙄😂 -Tris

So, let me explain. My name is Tris Prior. I'm a sixteen year old girl who lives in Alabama. Tobias Eaton is my best friend, well internet best friend. He lives in California, exactly 1,936 miles away. He's a whole year older than me, but I don't care.

He is always there for me, and I trust him more than anybody. People had always told me to never talk to people I met online. But here I am having a best friend that I met through Instagram.

For some reason, our conversations always start with random screaming. It's our thing I guess.

Hiya. Better? -Tobias.

Much. 😆 Now what was the random screaming about? -Tris

DID YOU FORGET WHAT TOMORROW IS?! -Tobias

I smile when I remember the date. Of course I didn't forget, but I just wasn't thinking about it at the time. Today is November 20, the day before the one year anniversary of our friendship.

OF COURSE NOT! Did you just get home? -Tris

Yep. It's only 2:30 here remember? Not 4:30. 😝 -Tobias

Shut up. I still don't think it's fair that you get out at 2:30 and I get out at 3:00. -Tris

Wanna ft? -Tobias

My smile grows wider if possible. Something weird stirs in my stomach at the thought of seeing his face. I don't know how to describe it, but I like it.

Yassss. Call me whenever. -Tris

Okay. I'll be home in about ten minutes then I'll FaceTime you. -Tobias.

Okayyyy -Tris

I decide to play some games on my phone while I wait for the call. I'm in the middle of playing "Rolling Sky" when I get a notification that Tobias wants to FaceTime. I click accept and set my phone on my bed, using my PopSocket to hold it up.

When his face pops up, I get that feeling in the pit of my stomach again. I guess this is what people consider butterflies. Why would I have butterflies?

"Hey bestie," he says in a girly voice causing me to laugh. His dark blue eyes are shining, and he is flashing his award winning, white smile.

I remember when I saw his face for the first time on Snapchat. As soon as he sent me a selfie for the first time, I remember exactly what was going through my mind. I finally had an internet friend and I was so excited that I couldn't think straight.

"Watcha' doing?" I ask way to excited.

"Tris," he says. "I just got home. Remember? I'm not doing anything." He chuckles as I blush. Wait. Blush?

"Oh. Guess what happened today." I say remembering something.

"Hmmm..." He starts tapping his chin pretending to think. "I give up."

"So, do you remember me telling you about Peter Hayes?"

"Isn't he the 'bad boy' who thinks he runs the school, but really everyone hates him?" he asks making air quotations around the words 'bad boy.'

"Yeah. Anyway, at lunch today, he was eating a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. He bit into and peanut butter went all over him. I wouldn't be surprised if he got it in his underwear!" My laughter is uncontrollable as I retell the story.

He laughs and says, "That's great. Yesterday my friend thought he was a lion."

"Wait," I say, catching my breath. "What?"

"We were walking out to our cars and he just roared." he says, stifling a laugh. "I don't know where it came from."

I laugh so hard that my stomach hurts, and I feel tears of laughter springing in my eyes.

We talk for a while and eventually we hang up because it is getting late where I live. Tomorrow is Saturday, and it's also a very special day for us.

It has only been a few minutes, and I already miss his voice. I miss his laugh. I miss everything. I make it sound like he's dead, but I just wish that he was here with me instead od across the country.

As I close my eyes, I realize something. It's a scary thought, but I find myself smiling.

I like Tobias Eaton.

I have a crush on my best friend.

And he lives 1,936 miles away.
