silly silly string

Tie it up
Don't be shy little bird
It's only some string.

There's only so much time left
Before you stand on the stool
Every inch of you trembling
As you tighten that silly string
Around your pale neck
It's not much
But it will suffice.

But first-
Before you do-
Bid them farewell.

Sing 'em a last lullaby
Tuck the kids in
Wipe clean the countertops
Make sure they're spotless
But don't you dare regret
The life you didn't let yourself have.

Stand on the stool
Your heart in one hand
Brain in the other
And grab hold of that silly silly string
Feel the pain you're ushering in
The life shunned brutally
Feel your mother's hands ladling
Life back into you when you were young
And just a boy afraid of rope.

Little bird
You can't be done yet
The silly string is oozing
Between your fingers
This is what you get for being doubtful
It looks like there won't be
A missing place at the dinner table
After all.

. . . I'm glad you chose the life.
